A new Premier League season is about to get underway and Manchester City set out as favorites to retain the title, although they will need to show the same or an even higher level than they displayed in the last four campaigns.

The 2024-5 season will be Erling Haaland’s third with City and as time marches on, the records and limits that the Norwegian has in his sights seem to be getting shorter.

What Premier League records is Haaland heading towards?

With 63 goals in 66 Premier League games in his first two seasons, Haaland is averaging just under a goal per game. He is slowly converting himself into one of English football’s historic player and is fast approaching the 100-goals mark - a barrier which just 34 players have breached. Alan Shearer was the first to three figures, reaching his century in Blackburn Rovers’ 2-1 win over Spurs on 30 December 1995.

Spurs’ Son Heung-min became the most recent member of the Premier League’s 100 Club, scoring his 100th league goal on 8 April 2023.

Haaland meanwhile set the record for most goals in one Premier League season, scoring 36 goals in the 2022/23 season - an achievement that seems difficult to beat, although if there is anyone who can threaten that record, it’s Haaland.

He finished last season with 27 goals which gives him a total of 63, requiring 37 to reach his century. Shearer, the quickest to 100, did it in 124 games. Erling is two thirds of the way there and having played 66 games.

Clear objective for Haaland and City

Although for Haaland the collective gains surely surpass any individual glory. The Norwegian striker knows that if he firing goals in regularly, his team has a great chance of fighting for and winning a fifth consecutive title, which is without a doubt the main objective.

However, he also has the chance to equal two legends of the English league: Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry, two players who marked an era.

And Haaland manages to become the top scorer of the 2023/24 Premier League season, he will equal Shearer and Thierry Henry as the only players to win the Golden Boot in three consecutive seasons.

Alan Shearer did it in the 1994-95, 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons with 34, 31 and 25 goals, adding up to 90 goals in three years. While for his part, Henry did it in the 2003-2004, 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons, scoring 30, 25 and 27 goals, accumulating 82 goals.

Haaland’s goal scoring record seems to have left these two behind and is on track to equal this record, albeit with more goals, as Haaland has achieved this in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons with 36 and 27 goals, respectively, and if he continues scoring at the current rate, could finish the new campaign in the 90s or higher.
