Férland Mendy to renew with Real Madrid: contract and salary details
The club and player reached an agreement to extend his existing contract by a further two more seasons. Ancelotti was keen to keep him at all costs although it won’t change the Davies operation.
Férland Mendy is set to renew his contract with Real Madrid. There is no signature yet, but the agreement was closed in the last few hours. Under the previous arrangement, his contract would have been due to expire next summer but Carlo Ancelotti made it clear that he wanted the full-back to continue.
For the coach, Mendy is “defensively, the best left-back in the world” at a time when left-sided full-backs are hard to come by. The club has accepted the coach’s petition and the player has commited to a two-year extension that will keep him tied to the club until June 2027 when he will be 31 years old. When his new contract is up, and if both parties are in agreement, any further revisions will be for one year only.
Davies still in the frame
It’s good news for Ancelotti and his coaching staff. A few months ago, when there was talk behind closed doors about Alphonso Davies’ possible arrival, Carletto put pressure on the club to ensure that it would not lead to Férland’s departure under any circumstances. Even when the siren calls from Saudi Arabia came, he was vehemently opposed to the defender leaving. And that will continue to be the case.
Real Madrid are keeping the deal to sign the Canadian on hold for now with the plan to bring him in on a free. Mendy’s renewal does not change anything in that regard. The one thing it does clarify is who would leave if Davies signs - Fran García would be moved on either on loan, or sold.
Tough defender to face
Last season, Mendy made a total of 37 appearances in all competitions, being the ninth outfield player with the most minutes (the fourth defender, with 1,147 minutes more than Fran García) and scored one goal - the team’s second in the 5-3 Super Cup semi-final win against Atlético in Saudi Arabia.
In total, he has contributed six goals and given out ten assists. Mere anecdotes for a player whose brilliance is centered in the defensive - even Lamine Yamal came to confess that he is the most difficult rival he has faced. The numbers reinforce that claim.
Stalking legends
Quietly, without any fuss, Mendy is on his way to making history with Madrid - with 175 official matches, he will soon surpass Ronaldo Nazário (177) in the ranking of appearances by foreign players and has legends like Zidane (227) or Figo (245) in his sights. Within the two and a half seasons he has left at the club, he has time to overtake them.
As for what he has won during his five years in Chamartín, his honors includes two Champions Leagues, three Leagues, a Copa del Rey, two European Super Cups, three Spanish Super Cups and a Club World Cup. Plus whatever the future holds, Mendy is staying. It will be made official soon. Deal closed: until 2027.
