Of all the names that have been linked with the vacant Cruz Azul head coach position, the experienced Ricardo ‘Tuca’ Ferretti will be the chosen one. The Brazilian-born boss is to be appointed by president Víctor Velázquez, who is looking for a new boss who will shake things up at the club in the short-term before a implementing a longer-term strategy.

Ferretti pips Mohamed and Sánchez to the post

In the last meeting held by the club’s board of directors, in which they discussed their ideal type of coach for the objectives they are looking to achieve, Ferretti moved to the top of the queue ahead of Argentine Antonio Mohamed and legendary Mexican striker Hugo Sánchez.

AS Mexico understands that Ferretti became the favoured choice of those in charge of the club as Velázquez was particularly impressed with the former Tigres’ boss vision of how Cruz Azul can move forward. Ferretti is no stranger to starting a new project from scratch and has been successful much more often than not.

Until a short time ago, Mohamed looked odds on to given the job but Ferretti has convinced the board that he is the right man for the job with his plans about how to build a team that will allow La Máquina to compete at the very top end of the Liga MX table for the first time since they won the Clausura 2021.

As things stand, Ferretti, who took his first coaching job at Pumas more than 30 years ago, is awaiting official confirmation of his new role from the Cruz Azul board. The former midfielder will be hoping to win the 15th title of his career at his new club, with his first coming with Chivas in 1997.

Guillermo Vázquez to join Cruz Azul as Ferretti’s assistant

Guillermo Vázquez, the man who came agonisingly close to leading Cruz Azul to their ninth title in that infamous clash against Club América in May 2013, will join Ferreti at the club as assistant coach. Earlier that same year, Vázquez had previous led Los Celestes to a long-awaited trophy when they defeated Atlante in the final of the Copa MX.

When will Ricardo Ferretti take charge of Cruz Azul for the first time?

Interim boss Joaquín Moreno is expected to take charge of the team for one last time in Wednesday’s game against Atlas. Provided all the required paperwork is completed on time, Ferretti should be on the bench for his first match on Saturday, when Cruz Azul play host to Juárez.
