Going into the Estadio Azteca against América is like playing at a disadvantage for Liga MX teams, as the side have not suffered a defeat at home since 20 February last year. And with the 2-1 win over former coach Miguel Herrera’s Xolos, the capital club can now celebrate extending their unbeaten run to a year.

Although they struggled in the final minutes of the game despite playing with an extra man, Tano Ortíz’s side still have the aura of an invincible team, and in the Clausura 2023 alone, in eight games played, they have now won three in a row at their home ground.

You have to go back to the sixth matchday of the Clausura 2022, when they were still coached by Santiago Solari, to remember the last time Las Águilas failed to win at their stadium. Pachuca were their downfall that afternoon with goals from Nico Ibáñez, Avilés Hurtado and ‘Pocho’ Guzmán, and for the Azulcremas Henry Martín scored.

Sides will meet again a year later

América’s next game at the Azteca will be against the last team to beat them and the team just below them in this tournament: Pachuca. Los Tuzos, like Las Águilas, have 16 points and are in the fight to be leaders of the tournament along with Monterrey and Tigres.
