After finishing as runners-up to Argentina in Qatar four years ago, France are aiming to regain the World Cup trophy they last lifted in Russia in 2018. Thursday’s game against Ivory Coast in Nantes will give Didier Deschamps the first of two opportunities to fine-tune his star-studded attacking lineup, which includes Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué and Michael Olise, before Les Bleus face Senegal, Iraq and Norway in Group I. France also take on Northern Ireland in their final warm-up game on Monday.
Ivory Coast have lost only two of their last 14 games, although one of those defeats came against Egypt in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations, their most recent competitive match. Franck Kessié, Nicolas Pépé and Ibrahim Sangaré are among the most established stars in the squad, which also features exciting young talents such as Manchester United’s Amad Diallo and RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande.
