France vs Poland: The lay of the land

The French could benefit from rest

If we’re honest, the French had a relatively easy ride through the group stages and into the knockout round. Following victories over Denmark and Australia ‘Les Bleus’ already knew they had qualified for the Round of 16 before playing Tunisia in their final Group D match. It was in that final match, that head coach Didier Deschamps decided to rotate his squad and with that, they fell to a shock 1-0 loss. Needless to say, the former World Cup winner was heavily criticized for his choice, but to be fair to Deschamps, his stars would have gained some valuable R & R as they prepare for a deep run in the tournament. Of course, the first obstacle on that path is a Robert Lewandowski led Poland side that could be more trouble than they appear.

Inconsistent is what the Polish have been

It wouldn’t be completely inaccurate to say that Poland is lucky to be in the Round of 16 at the World Cup. Despite the fact that they lost their final group game 2-0 to tournament favorites Argentina, they were able to progress to the knockout stage via their goal difference, which was better than fellow group contender Mexico’s. With that they must now take on a France side that will be well rested full of some of the world’s best players. Robert Lewandowski and CO. have impressed at times, but most definitely disappointed at others. They will need to be as sharp as possible when they take on the French on Sunday.

France vs Poland: The Prediction

Though France is clearly the better team between the two, Poland’s defensive prowess is worth noting. Having held the mighty Argentina to just two goals, they also managed to keep clean sheets against both Mexico and Saudi Arabia. Indeed, the Polish are a physically sound time and will likely give the fast-paced French a fair share of problems. On the other hand, we do expect that when the final whistle blows it will be the French who prevail. We’re going with a 2-1 France win.

An old friendship

One of the interesting factors in play in this fixture, is the long-standing friendship between the two nations. Indeed, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, Poland saw a number of high-profile artists and intellectuals move to Paris. Such was the case with the famous classical composer Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849), born in Poland to a Polish mother and a French-expatriate father (hence his French name). There was also Marie Curie (born Maria Sklodowska, 1867-1934), the first and only Nobel laureate in two different sciences and first female professor at the Sorbonne University. This is all to say, there are quite a few links between the two nations, however, we don’t believe it will be a friendly affair when they meet on Sunday. Enjoy!
