Never before has there been as much interest in the FIFA Women’s World Cup as the upcoming 2023 edition in Australia and New Zealand. Players from the 32 nations are about to take centre stage, with some already household names in their home countries, and others worldwide. Germany midfielder Giulia Gwinn falls into the latter category and has revealed she turned down an ‘interesting’ offer to be the cover star on the German edition of Playboy before the tournament gets underway.

Gwinn: “More exciting and interesting topics to discuss”

The Bayern Munich player was polite but firm when explaining why she had refused: “I respect Playboy as a journalistic product but I’d rather people knew me for being a soccer player out on the field. In general, I think - and hope - we’ll have much more exciting and important topics to discuss with the World Cup coming up”.

Reports in Germany have claimed the first thing she did after receiving the proposal was discuss it with Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, the national team coach.

Germany coach Voss-Tecklenburg tempted by same offer in 1989

Coincidentally, Voss-Tecklenburg herself was presented with the same offer as a player in 1989: “I could have gotten 15,000 marks (around $28,2000 at the time) for it. And I would have had no problem being photographed like this. But I had been through some awkward situations with my parents. I didn’t want to subject them to something like that...”

“I think Playboy’s photos are very aesthetically pleasing. I would let each player make her own decision, but would warn them of the advantages and disadvantages. Could you deal with the consequences? Would they bring you anything positive? If she’s okay with it, there’s nothing wrong with it”.

Gwinn expected to star at Women’s World Cup 2023

At 24 years old, Gwinn is one of the best-known and most-followed German players on social media. And she hasn’t needed Playboy to get there, it’s all come down to her ability with a soccer ball.
