André-Pierre Gignac, star forward for Tigres, used his participation in the All-Star Game between MLS and Liga MX to express his discontent with the upcoming Leagues Cup. In a press conference, Gignac not only suggested a change in the format to include MLS teams traveling to Mexico, but also voiced his opposition to the Liga MX hiatus for the tournament.

Gignac emphasized that it would be beneficial for American clubs to play in Mexico due to the country’s varying altitudes and climates.

“It would be good for the American clubs to come and play in Mexico because Mexico has different altitudes and climates. That would be nice,” the French forward said.

With Liga MX being halted for the summer tournament, and comparing the situation to European football, Gignac remarked, “I don’t think in Europe Marseille would have accepted pausing the local tournament for a month to go to another country to compete in an international one.”

Leagues Cup and the U.S. “show”

Despite his criticisms, Gignac acknowledged that the Leagues Cup plays an important role in the growth of both leagues and in intensifying the rivalry between Mexico and the United States. “The United States is about the show, and that’s cool,” he added.

It’s not just Gignac who has expressed discontent with the Leagues Cup. Several players and coaches have voiced their criticisms, primarily due to the Liga MX hiatus and the logistical challenges of traveling to the United States. These critiques have sparked an ongoing debate about the tournament’s convenience and structure, underscoring the need for a potential review of the format.

Despite his views on the Leagues Cup, Gignac is focused on the All-Star Game, which will take place on July 24 in Columbus, Ohio.
