Although Gold Cup winner, Guillermo Ochoa, remains the number one goalkeeper for Salernitana, the sporting directors at the club decided to give him some competition for his position, and as a result they have signed French stopper, Benoit Costil.

At 36-years-old, Costil had played all of his career in his native country, France, until he made the move to Italy in order to cover the exit of Luige Sepe, who will no longer form a part of the squad of I Granata.

Costil has a wealth of international experience and honours

Costil played half of last season, the 22/23 campaign, with Auxerre. While playing for the now Ligue 2 team, he conceded 41 goals in 19 games and kept two clean sheets. During the winter market of 2023 he made the move to Lille but remained on the bench for the rest of the season.

The goalkeeper has also been an international level player. He received his first call up for Les Bleus in 2014, playing his one and only game in a non-official game two years later, against the Ivory Coast. He won the U-17 Euros with France and he also received a winner’s medal for the Nations League triumph of 2021, where France beat Spain in the final.

Which other goalkeepers play for Salernitana?

The Italian side, who came 15th out of 20 in the 2022/23 season, also have Jaco De Matteis, a 20-year-old, as well as Vincenzo Fiorillo, who is 33. Manager Paulo Sousa, the former Juventus, Inter and Dortmund manager who has taken charge of Swansea City, Leicester City and the Polish National Team, has plenty of options ahead of the new campaign as the club prepares to fight once again to maintain their status as a top division team in Italy.
