Henry Martín in doubt for América vs Chivas Clásico
The Mexican striker doesn’t appear to have fully recovered from his injury, and his presence in the next big event for the Águilas is in jeopardy.
Alarm bells are ringing in Coapa, as after a month and a week, Club América’s star striker Henry Martín appears not to have completed his recovery from injury, and consequently, he is unlikely to be available to take his place in the Mexican Clásico against Chivas this coming Saturday, 16 September.
Martín won’t be rushed back for Liga MX Clásico
Regarding this situation, Brazilian coach André Jardine spoke after Club América defeated Tigres 2-1 in the friendly match held on Sunday in Austin, Texas. He made it clear that he will not rush or force Henry’s recovery.
“I’m trying to remain calm; these injuries were not minor. We mustn’t rush him because a recurrence of the injury would be the worst news we could receive. So, we need to exercise patience and assess Henry on Tuesday during our training session to ensure he feels well and doesn’t experience any discomfort in his calf. He is a highly valuable player for us.”
When is Henry Martín expected to return?
On Friday, 4 August, the Mexican forward sustained a first-degree muscular injury in the medial calf of his right leg during the warm-up before facing Chicago Fire in the Leagues Cup. Martín was slated to be the starting striker in Jardine’s lineup; however, he did not even make it to the bench, and the next day, he left the training camp to return to Mexico City and commence his recuperation.
Despite initially estimating his return after five weeks since his withdrawal from the North American tournament, it now appears that he will be ready to step onto the field around Matchday 9 or 10 of the Apertura 2023.
Martín is not the only issue for Jardine. Defender Israel Reyes will also miss the match against Chivas, having suffered a thigh muscle tear against Cruz Azul. The América coach commented on this situation: “He will need at least another 15 to 20 days; it’s a muscular injury.”
