It took 14 years for Chivas to see the return of a club legend to their squad. Javier Hernández left the club in 2010 to join Manchester United, before moving on to Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham, Sevilla and LA Galaxy.

Hernández returns to his beloved club with the aforementioned extensive experience in top-level football, where he will undoubtedly bring his experience to a squad that is still in a stage of development.

Chicharito may have become the piece that Chivas needed in attack. Beyond his goalscoring ability and his vision, his understanding of the philosophy of the club is something that will accelerate his integration.

It remains to be seen when he will return to action as he is currently recovering from injury after suffering cruciate ligament damage last June when he was playing with LA Galaxy.

Hierro in charge of recruitment

Due to Chivas’ tradition of playing with only Mexican players, finding strikers with goalscoring ability has not been easy for the club led by Fernando Hierro and currently managed by Fernando Gago and previously by Veljko Paunovic.

In the last two campaigns, Chivas’ strikers went through something of a goalscoring crisis, which was reflected in the Clausura 2023 tournament, in which the club reached the final and lost to Tigres. Their top scorer was Víctor Guzmán, who to be exact, is not a natural striker, but more of a midfielder, and that was enough for him to be the top scorer with seven goals.

Much-needed goals

Chivas forwards Daniel Ríos, Ricardo Marín, Ronaldo Cisneros and José Juan Macías only scored four goals in the two most recent campaigns. Chicharito therefore arrives at Chivas with the intention of helping in the goalscoring department.

The former Real Madrid striker scored 19 goals for LA Galaxy in the 2022 MLS season, in which he was chosen as the MVP of the Los Angeles team and was even nominated for the league’s MVP. Chivas will be hoping for more of the same as they look to compete for the Liga MX title.
