Lionel Messi has finished the 2023 season with Inter Miami and now the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is preparing for Argentina’s upcoming games against Uruguay and Brazil.

While Messi is preparing with the Albiceleste for the World Cup qualifiers for 2026 - Nicolás Tagliafico - Messi’s teammate in the national team, has revealed what could be the key for the Inter Miami player to make it to the 2026 World Cup.

In an interview with La Nación in Argentina, Tagliafico explained that the 2024 Copa America in the United States could be key to Messi’s decision to continue playing for the three-time world champions with the idea of featuring at the 2026 World Cup.

“You know what the key is for Leo to continue playing? Winning the Copa America next year. If we win it, I think he can stretch it a little bit further,” said Tagliafico.

“If we had not won the World Cup, he would have retired (from the national team), but he achieved it and he wants to enjoy these months.

“If we go to the United States and win the Copa America, he will want to continue. We have to try to extend this run for as long as possible. If we win the Copa America, I’m convinced that it will be key for Leo.”

Messi would make history

The World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada would be Messi’s sixth World Cup, which would be an all-time soccer record.

Messi’s international appearances

If Messi manages to make it to 2026, he will make over 200 appearances for Argentina. After the two upcoming internationals with the Albiceleste, he will have played 180 international matches for his country.
