To understand Inter Miami’s success in Major League Soccer 2024, it’s crucial to consider how Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino’s team overcame adversity throughout the season.

Led by Messi, Suárez, and company, the Herons are now close to securing the Supporters’ Shield and have their sights set on breaking the New England Revolution’s points record. However, the Columbus Crew present a formidable challenge.

After three consecutive draws in the 2024 MLS regular season, the Fort Lauderdale-based team will face the 2023 MLS Cup champion at Lower.com Field in Week 36. This match holds significant importance, as a victory would not only secure Inter Miami the title for the most points in the current MLS campaign but also keep them in contention for surpassing the Revolution’s 2021 record of 73 points.

To achieve this incredible feat, Inter Miami must win all three of their remaining matches. The team will look to get back on track this Wednesday against Columbus, followed by an away match against Toronto FC at BMO Field on Saturday, October 5. After the international break, they’ll face the New England Revolution, the very team whose record they’re trying to break, on Saturday, October 19.

Tata Martino’s squad currently lead the Eastern Conference with 65 points. Their closest competitor for the Supporters’ Shield is LA Galaxy, who top the Western Conference with 58 points. Columbus Crew, sitting at 57 points, also remain in the hunt, and a win in Week 36 would close the gap and hinder Inter Miami’s chances of pulling ahead.

Meanwhile, FC Cincinnati, with 56 points, would need a near miracle to stay in the race, as they don’t have any direct matches against Inter Miami and lag behind in goal difference. Wednesday’s match will be crucial for David Beckham and Jorge Mas’ team, not only for securing the Shield but also for maintaining home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The game between Columbus Crew - Inter Miami will be played on Wednesday October 2, with kick off at 7:45 p.m. ET / 4:45 p.m. PT. The following channels will be broadcasting the game live in the US: FS1, Fox Deportes. Watch the Columbus vs Inter Miami live stream on FuboTV (Free Trial)
