2022: knocked out by Morocco
At the 2022 World Cup, Spain was eliminated by Morocco in the Round of 16 after Achraf Hakimi and Bono scored and saved the decisive penalty kicks of the match.
2018: knocked out in the Round of 16 by Russia
Four years earlier, Spain was also eliminated in the Round of 16 by Russia, the hosts, on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Before then, in 2014, Spain had a distressing tournament, becoming the fifth defending champions to not make it past the first round.

Rewinding back to 2006, France knocked Spain out of the tournament in Germany
1990: knocked out in the Round of 16 by Yugoslavia
The only other time Spain had made it to the Round of 16 and lost was in 1990 when Yugoslavia defeated Spain 2–1 to knock the Spaniards out of the tournament.
