“Send it to me”: hopeful Mexican star is looking for his 2026 World Cup sticker
Toluca midfielder Marcel Ruiz opens up about injury struggles and national team absence while holding onto hope of playing on home soil.

Marcel Ruiz has not been included in recent call-ups by Javier Aguirre, but the Toluca midfielder made it clear he has no intention of giving up on his goal of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Mexico. He insisted he will keep pushing to earn his place despite the setback.
Ruiz was left out of the latest Liga MX-based roster, a decision that surprised many fans given the strong form he has shown with Toluca’s Diablos Rojos in recent weeks.

Injury setback adds to national team frustration
Speaking during the official launch of the Panini 2026 World Cup album – where he features as one of Mexico’s collectible stickers – Ruiz addressed what he described as a difficult stretch in recent weeks.
He revealed he has been dealing with a partial ligament tear in his knee, an issue that has not kept him off the field but did play a role in his absence from the most recent national team squad. Even so, he struck a determined tone about his current situation.
“I’ve learned to never give up and to never stop believing,” Ruiz said, also thanking Mexican fans for their continued support.
A childhood dream realized in Panini album appearance
The midfielder also shared his excitement about being included in the official World Cup sticker collection, calling it a special personal milestone.
“It’s really nice to see yourself there. I’ve been collecting since 2010 and I still haven’t gotten my own sticker, but if anyone has it, send it to me,” he joked.
Ruiz added that the prospect of playing at the 2026 World Cup carries even greater meaning given that Mexico will be one of the host nations. For him, the dream is not just alive – it’s deeply personal.
“We’ll keep fighting to play in a World Cup at home,” he said during the event, where he also spent time with Mexican soccer legends.
