Vinícius, Valverde fire Real Madrid to victory in Morocco

Vinícius Júnior and Federico Valverde both scored twice for Madrid as the UEFA Champions League holders won 5-3 at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, with Karim Benzema also netting for the LaLiga giants.

Moussa Marega and Luciano Vietto - the latter with a brace - were on the scoresheet for Saudis Al Hilal, who qualified for this month’s tournament in Morocco as winners of the AFC Champions League.

Five Club World Cups, three Intercontinental Cups

It is the first time since 2018 that Madrid have won the Club World Cup, a competition that was founded in 2000 and involves representatives from Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania. Los Blancos also claimed the trophy in 2014, 2016 and 2017.

The 14-time European champions are the tournament’s most decorated club, ahead of domestic arch rivals Barcelona, who have won it on three occasions.

Club World Cup: most successful clubs

  • Real Madrid: five wins (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022)
  • Barcelona: three wins (2009, 2011, 2015)
  • Corinthians: two wins (2000, 2012)
  • Bayern Munich: two wins (2013, 2020)

FIFA now counts Intercontinental Cup as world title

On top of their five Club World Cup triumphs, Madrid have three further global crowns to their name, because they lifted the now-defunct Intercontinental Cup in 1960, 1998 and 2002.

Although the Intercontinental Cup was only contested by the holders of Europe and South America’s continental titles, FIFA now recognises the winners of the trophy as world champions.

The event ran from 1960 to 2004, overlapping with the inception of the Club World Cup.

After its inaugural edition in Brazil 23 years ago, the Club World Cup was not held again until 2005, but has been staged every year since.
