Rodri arrived in the box as the unsuspecting ball spun furiously after colliding with a defender following a cross from the right. The Spaniard took three large, galloping strides forward, rotating the angle of his hips just wide enough to be able to open his foot and slap the ball past the gaggle of onlooking teammates, defenders and most importantly, Onana in the Inter goal.

As his studs planted into the ground they twisted the turf and flung blades of grass in all directions as the midfielder scarpered off into the corner of the goal to celebrate, wild hands throttling the air, pearly teeth glaring and obtusely wide eyes held back in his skull only by the air pressure as his teammates followed behind. Manchester City went on to lift the trophy that history seemed to be hiding from them, one more in the cabinet that continues to expand like its own universe.

But how many trophies have they won?

Manchester City’s rise to prominence started in 2008 when Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment bought the club. Now owned by the brother of the current president of the UAE, the club had an almost unlimited pot of money into which to dip their long arms: they trophy hunt could really begin.

Manchester City, before angry messages are sent on social media, did win trophies before the Abu Dhabi takeover, but nowhere near the level of what they are experiencing today. Prior to the investment from the billionaire royal family, City had won the First Division of English football just twice, and only one of those wins post-war. They had 4 FA Cups (2 post-war) and 2 League Cups. They also won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970. To put these numbers into context, they have won the Second Division seven times, a joint record.

And that was the extent of the City trophy cabinet. Not small by any means, but also not all-conquering and seemingly unstoppable. Since Abu Dhabi took control, they have won much more, sealing seven more league titles, 3 FA Cups, 6 League Cups and now a Champions League.
