There will be some changes ahead of the start of the Clausura 2023 for fans who will be rooting for their team to win the trophy at the end of the tournament. The Liga MX has announced that the majority of games will be broadcast through paid streaming subscriptions, meaning that on the first matchday of the tournament only two games will be broadcast through antennas or cable and the other nine through a paid streaming subscription.

How to watch

So the match on Friday January 6 between Mazatlán and Club León and the one on Saturday between Pumas UNAM and Juárez will be broadcast on open television. Meanwhile, the rest of the nine games of the opening weekend for the Clausura 2023 will be available on paid streaming subscriptions that will work the following way:

Fans who want to watch every single Liga MX match weekend-after-weekend will have to either pay for a special cable or satellite subscription or have internet at home and pay for four different paid streaming subscriptions (Vix+, Afizzionados, ESPN and Fox Sports Premium). The monthly cost of the total paid streaming subscriptions is 537 pesos ($27.69) and this is not including internet or paying for regular cable.

In a study done by Reforma, the total cost to watch every single Liga MX each month during the Clausura 2023 will be 1,287 pesos ($66.37) or 15,444 pesos ($796.43) for the entire year, this includes all the streaming services, cable and internet. On top of paying that amount of money, people have to have a smart television, phone or tablet to watch the games from home, which according to a study done by the ENDUTIH (Encuesta Nacional sobre Disponibilidad y uso de Tecnologías de la Información en los Hogares) 60.6% of the population in Mexico already have access to that.

According to the same study done by the ENDUTIH, less than 20% of the population in Mexico don’t connect their smartphones, televisions or tablets to the internet. A further factor affecting the amount of viewers of the Clausura 2023 is the monthly minimum wage in Mexico, which is between 6,200 pesos ($319.71) and 6,400 pesos ($330.02). This means that people have to pay between 13.7% and 20.7% of their salary to have access to the games each weekend.
