Update:

This evening’s Champions League semi final first leg between the holders PSG and six-time winners Bayern Munich holds so much allure that it actually feels like it could be the final. Two teams who have come face-to-face many times in this tournament - including the 2020 final. This will be their fourth meeting in the knockout stages so far this decade and the second time they have crossed paths in this edition.

Two coaches who know each other well

And it will be another battle of wits between the two coaches: Luis Enrique and Vincent Kompany - of the three previous occasions they have been on opposite benches, it’s the Belgian who comes out best with two narrow wins. Lucho’s only victory against Kompany came in last year’s Club World Cup.

Neither won the Champions League during their playing days but Luis Enrique has lifted the trophy twice as a coach: with Barça in 2015 and PSG last year.

This will be Kompany’s second attempt at reaching the final since he took the reins at Bayern. Next month’s final will be held in Budapest on May 29 - almost two years to the day of his appointment.

Kompany moved to Munich in May 2024. Bayern were impressed at how he had skillfully returned Burnley back to the Premier League in his debut season. In May 2024, they paid the English club $13.75 million to release the Belgian coach - a compensation fee for the remaining years of his contract.

Kompany’s contract with Bayern

He signed a three-year contract with similar conditions to his predecessors - Hansi Flick, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann. In October 2025, Kompany agreed a two-year contract extension. The new deal will expire on June 30, 2029. The club has not disclosed details of his salary but it is believed that Kompany earns somewhere around $8 million per year before tax. He also has the chance to boost his pay packet to $10.5 million gross by reaching certain performance-related objectives. All in all, that makes him the best-paid coach in the Bundesliga and one of the highest earners in Europe’s major leagues.

In Germany, Kompany has guided Bayern to back-to-back Bundesliga titles along with the domestic Super Cup. Now his sights on set on the Champions League, with Bayern the bookmakers’ favorite at +195 to clinch their seventh European crown.
