MLS ALL-STAR GAME

How to vote in the MLS All-Star ballot

For the first time supporters will be involved in team selection for the All-Star Game, voting for the squad to face Arsenal on 19 July.

Update:
Fans can now select the MLS All-Star team

There’s little over a month to go until the hotly-anticipated MLS All-Star game against Premier League side Arsenal. For the first time supporters have been given the opportunity to help select the team, but there’s not long left to get your vote in.

MLS fans have until 11:59pm (PT) on Wednesday, 14 June to submit their choice of 12 players to represent the league against Arsenal. For fans on the East Coast, that’s 2:59am, on Thursday 15 June (ET).

The game will be played at the Audi Field in Washington, DC and broadcast live on AppleTV. The MLS side will be led by DC United head coach Wayne Rooney, who will also select a proportion of the squad.

How is the MLS All-Star team selected?

The MLS side will face an Arsenal team who recently finished second in the Premier League and led Manchester City for much of the season. They will represent a stern test for the All-Star team and the MLS outfit will need to bring together the top players in the league.

Rooney will be given a 26-man squad for the game, with team selection decided by three separate routes:

- 12 players - combined vote of fan, media and current MLS players

- 12 players - picked by MLS All-Star head coach Wayne Rooney

- 2 players - picked by MLS Commissioner Don Garber

Ballot rules for the MLS All-Star Game

The 14 players selected by Rooney and Garber is a fairly simple concept, but the selection process for the remaining 12 is a little more convoluted.

MLS fans, media members and current players can each select 11 players from seven distinct positions: goalkeeper, right back, centre back (x2), left back, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder (x2), and forward/winger (x3).

The MLS will then tally up the most popular player, or players, in each position to build a complete starting XI. Once these players have been removed from the pool, the player with the most votes of the remaining players will be added to complete the 12.

To be involved in the ballot, players must have featured in at least half of their club’s matches at the point when the voting began on 18 May. Rooney and Garber can select any MLS player, regardless of how often they have played.

The game will be held at DC United's Audi Field.
