Injury nightmare for Mexico: Luis Malagón suffers serious injury with Club América
América’s game against the Philadelphia Union was overshadowed by a first-half injury to Malagón, who was expected to start for El Tri at the World Cup.

Club América goalkeeper Luis Malagón appeared to suffer a serious injury during his side’s CONCACAF Champions Cup game against Philadelphia Union. The 29-year-old was taken from the field on a stretcher at Subaru Park, putting his World Cup hopes in doubt for Mexico.
The moment came in the 37th minute of a tense Champions Cup meeting with the MLS Supporters’ Shield champions. Malagón controlled a back-pass and shaped to play a right-footed pass out to the left wing. He lost his footing as he prepared to strike the ball and crumpled to the ground, calling for immediate medical assistance.
His concerned teammates quickly rushed over to comfort the stricken goalkeeper but he was unable to get back to his feet. After a substantial injury delay, Malagón was taken from the field of play on a stretcher.

The severity of the incident was clear and, with less than 100 days to go before the World Cup, the Mexico goalkeeper is now a major doubt for the tournament. Malagón has made 19 senior appearances for the national team since making his debut in 2023. He played 12 international games in 2025 and was the starting keeper as El Tri clinched the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the Nations League.
