Inter Miami lost 3-2 to Chicago Fire and they continue to drop places in the standings in the Eastern Conference. The David Beckham-owned franchise has lost three consecutive games after starting the campaign by defeating Montréal 2-0 and the Philadelphia Union 2-0.Since then the team managed by Phil Neville has dropped points against New York City FC (1-0), Toronto FC (2-0) and the Chicago Fire (3-2). Their next match will not be an easy one either to end this negative streak because they will go on the road to play against Cincinnati at TQL stadium, the number two seeded team in the Eastern Conference.

Results could affect Messi’s possible arrival

If they continue losing points and dropping places in the standings in the summer it will be hard to make a case for them to lure Lionel Messi to join the team in mid-season. If Inter Miami is out of the playoff picture or not a contender to win the 2023 MLS Cup it will mean that the Argentine international could go many months without playing if Inter Miami’s season comes to an end early.

So a great part of the strategy of bringing Lionel Messi to Major League Soccer is for him to join a competitive team with aspirations to win trophies. Since the 35-year-old wants to remain in peak form to defend the Copa América title with Argentina next year and possibly make a sixth World Cup appearance in 2026.
