Arrigo Sacchi once said that ‘football is the most important of the least important things’ and he was right. Within that, shirt numbers are up there with the most important of the least important things about football - we shouldn’t care, but oh, how we do.

Ahead of the 2024 MLS campaign, Inter Miami have announced their squad shirt numbers which will be worn by the players as they fight on all fronts for all the possible trophies.

In a statement, Inter Miami said that the club “has confirmed the official squad numbers for First Team players ahead of the start of the Club’s historic first-ever international preseason tour and the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.”

Squad number surprises for Inter Miami

The usual suspects have all got their customary numbers. Don’t worry, you won’t need to call the Inter Miami helpline: Messi is 10, Suárez is 9, Busquets is 5 and Alba has 18.

However, away from that, there are some interesting changes. Leonardo Campana has been given the number 8 shirt after letting his old number 9 go to the Uruguayan forward, while substitute goalkeeper Cole Jensen has chosen 99, which I believe should be punishable by water pistol. Numbers 3, 12 and 21 are all free; the transfer window is still open...
