Kylian Mbappé came close to scoring the fastest ever hat-trick in Champions League history on Wednesday night - but fell just short of Mohamed Salah’s record.

What’s the fastest UCL hat-trick ever?

In Madrid’s league-phase win over Olympiacos, Mbappé hit a first-half treble in six minutes and 42 seconds.

That’s just 30 seconds slower than Salah’s hat-trick in Liverpool’s 7-1 win at Rangers in October 2022. The Egyptian’s three-goal haul was timed at six minutes and 12 seconds, per UEFA.

Four-star Mbappé

In the second half in Greece, Mbappé then scored again to complete a four-goal display, as Madrid triumphed 4-3 to end a three-game winless run in all competitions.

The victory left Los Blancos in fifth place in the league-phase standings, with 12 points from five games. Xabi Alonso’s men sit three points behind leaders Arsenal.

Mbappé overtakes Gomis

In the all-time list of the Champions League’s fastest hat-tricks, Mbappé’s treble puts him in second place ahead of Bafétimbi Gomis’s quick-fire three-goal salvo for Lyon in December 2011.

In the 2011/12 group stage, Gomis scored three times in the space of eight minutes - before later adding a fourth - in Lyon’s 7-1 victory over Dinamo Zagreb.

What’s the earliest UCL hat-trick ever?

As noted by the Spanish soccer stats specialist Mister Chip, Mbappé’s first-half hat-trick against Olympiacos is the third earliest in Champions League history.

The Frenchman’s third goal hit the net after 28 minutes and 19 seconds of the game in Piraeus - just over six minutes after Robert Lewandowski had completed his hat-trick for Bayern Munich in a March 2022 clash with RB Salzburg.

Lewandowski’s treble is the earliest ever in the European competition, two minutes and four seconds ahead of Marco Simone‘s 1996 hat-trick for AC Milan against Rosenborg.

Another UCL treble for Mbappé

Mbappé scoring exploits against Olympiacos represent the second time in 2025/26 that he has scored three or more goals in a Champions League game. The striker also netted a hat-trick in Madrid’s 5-0 win over Kairat Almaty in September.

Mbappé is the top scorer in this season’s Champions League, with nine goals in five games.

Across 92 career appearances in the Champions League - for Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and Madrid - Mbappé now has five hat-tricks. In total, the 26-year-old has scored 63 times in the continent’s top men’s club tournament.
