Is Real Betis’ Sergio Canales about to join Liga MX club Monterrey?
Mexican club Monterrey appear to be very well placed to snap up Spain international Canales, who has been at Betis since 2018.
Monterrey may be about to make a transfer-market splash by luring Real Betis’ Sergio Canales to the Liga MX, AS México understands.
The five-time Mexican champions are believed to be closing in on a deal to sign Canales, 32.
Monterrey are ready to pay between $12m and $15m for the attacking midfielder. Details of the contract that Rayados are preparing to hand the Spain international remain unknown.
Canales in line for Mexico move after successful Betis spell
Canales, who can also operate in a deeper midfield role or on the wing, has enjoyed the best form of his career since joining LaLiga club Betis in 2018.
In total, he has made 207 appearances for Los Verdiblancos, scoring 39 goals and supplying 30 assists.
Since the start of the 2021/22 LaLiga season, Canales has created 121 scoring chances in the Spanish top flight - more than any other midfielder.
Nations League winner with Spain
The Racing Santander youth product was part of the Spain squad that won the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League finals in June, but injuries have hampered his progress at international level.
In addition to Betis and Racing, Canales has also played for Real Madrid, Valencia and Real Sociedad. In just over 500 club games as a professional, he has scored 68 goals.
Since making his senior Spain debut in 2018, he has been capped 11 times, netting once for La Roja.
