Mexico is gearing up for next month’s Gold Cup with a couple of friendly matches against Switzerland and Turkey. Head coach Javier Aguirre has trimmed his initial roster to 31 players, with the possibility of adding up to four more players from América - much of that will depending on how the Liga MX side performs in this weekend’s crucial Club World Cup play-in tie against Los Angeles FC.

A challenge for Javier Aguirre
With América preparing for their playoff match against LAFC to secure a place at the Club World Cup, Aguirre faces a tough dilemma in managing the absence of key national team players, including first-choice goalkeeper Ángel Malagón.
Regarding the situation, Aguirre commented: “América has a match against LAFC, Cruz Azul is competing in the Concachampions... it won’t be easy to get started. We have to piece together a puzzle with players who didn’t qualify, others who made it to the quarterfinals and semifinals, those who require mandatory rest, and then those joining us. We’re considering several scenarios and will do our best to optimize our training sessions.”
