Several countries have an interest in staging soccer games from Europe’s major leagues and club tournaments in the short to medium term - an opportunity which would give and opening for competitions such as LaLiga, the Premier League or even the Champions League to be developed outside of Europe. Sooner or later, it appears to a reality that will end up happening.

One of the competitions that is particularly keen to promote its passion and emotion to other corners of the world, especially to the Americas, is Spain’s LaLiga. This week LaLiga president Javier Tebas once again highlighted that such a possibility exists.

Tebas to take LaLiga to the US

During a video conference held this Wednesday as part of the World Football Summit Americas, held over the past three days at Hotel International Polanco in Mexico City, Tebas spoke again about the desire to have official LaLiga games in the United States and mentioned Miami as the focus of its objective.

“It’s the third time we’ve tried it and maybe this time it will be third time lucky. I don’t know if it will be next season, but our intention is to play in Miami in the future,” Tebas explained in a video conference.

LaLiga wants to copy the formula of the NFL, MLB and NBA

To underline his message, the LaLiga president offered an example of North American competitions, which regularly choose destinations such as Mexico or European countries to hold official seasonal games, making it clear that LaLiga’s plan is to have one game per season abroad, specifically in the United States.

“It’s just one competitive match. There was some controversy with it, because initially they thought there were more than 600 LaLiga games, but it is only one game. And that’s to show respect and pay attention to the wishes of soccer fans in the United States. We have see how NBA and NFL teams play in Europe and Mexico - it is a sign of respect and generates resonance in the American market,” Tebas explained.

In April, Tebas detailed plans for one LaLiga game, involving either Real Madrid or Barcelona, to be played in the United States during the 2025/26 campaign. “An official match in the U.S. will strengthen our position in the North American market, which is the second market for La Liga after Spain,” he said in an interview with Expansión.
