WOMEN'S FOOTBALL

Jenni Hermoso returns to the Spain National Team for the Nations League

The Pachuca player has returned to the National Team for the first time since the World Cup.

Update:
The Pachuca player has returned to the National Team for the first time since the World Cup.

Spain return to international football and with it comes the inclusion of Jenni Hermoso in the side. A new squad list from boss Montse Tomé ahead of the games against Switzerland and Italy will give another chance for the world champions to show their talent. And this time they can do it with the Pachuca forward in their ranks.

Jenni Hermoso was left out of Montse Tomé's previous squad list, the first during her time as manager, with the coach saying that she was “protecting her”. The World Cup final on August 20 was the last time that the Madrid-born player wore the red shirt: almost two months later, she is back.

Women's football:

Which players have returned to the squad?

And Hermoso is not the only old face to get the call. In September both Esther González and Ivana Paralluelo were missing due to injury, and they have been given the green light to return. One of the doubts around the squad was Salma Paralluelo, who has just got back from a niggling injury and she was also given the go-ahead to get back into the mix.

The return of the two attackers means that this time Lucía García and Amaiur will have a tougher time getting minutes on the field, now there is more elite competition next to them on the team bus. In the middle of the pitch is Real Madrid’s metronome, Maite Oroz, in place of Irene Guerrero, who is yet to make her debut with Manchester United. Alexia and Aitana are, of course, included.

Are Mapi León and Patri Guijarro in the squad?

There are plenty of different faces in the squad compared to last time, with names such as Claudia Florentino, María Pérez and Rosa Márquez all dropping out. None of those three players have their future with La Roja secure and tied down, but the absence of big hitters in the previous squad list opened up the pathway for them to join and the dream will have to wait. In terms of players who were expected to be there but who did not make the cut, wide attackers Eva Navarro (Atlético Madrid) and Alba Redondo (Levante) have not been included.

In Montse’s second stab at a squad list we are still yet to see any advances in terms of the two players who left the last call-up: Mapi León and Patri Guijarro, who have not been selected, showing that there has not been any positive movement in that regard. Both players decided to leave the squad during the last international break due to their disagreements with the way things were run at the Spanish Football Federation.

When do Spain play in the Nations League?

Other players such as Laia Aleixandri, Lucía or Amaiur - all members of the original 15 - are back and ready to play for la selección.

The Spain Women’s Team return to work with tensions cooled and normality resumed. The team have the Nations League ahead of them, and they currently lead group A4 with 6 points. In what will be the second test for Montse Tomé, the side are set to go up against Italy and Switzerland. The players will arrive at the Las Rozas training centre on Monday 23 October, and from there they will fly to Italy. After the game they will return to Madrid for a day before flying out once again, to Zurich.
