Jhon Murillo became the second new fact to arrive at Atlas ahead of the Clausura 2024, joining recent recruit Raymundo Fulgencio as the new additions in Beñat San José's side. A club statement issued on Wednesday read: “Atlas FC announce the incorporation of Venezuelan striker Jhon Murillo to our first men’s team, who arrives from Atlético San Luis, the team with which he reached the semi-finals of the Apertura 2023. Murillo immediately got down to work with the Rojinegros, under the orders of Beñat San José, prior to their debut in the new Liga MX tournament”.

Atlas gave a brief resume of the player’s professional career so far - detailing his beginnings in his native Venezuela with Zamora FC, a team with whom he winning the national league title twice (in 2012-13 and 2013-14). During his time with Zamora, Murillo also participated in two consecutive editions of the Copa Libertadores. It was his great performance in the continental tournament that attracted attention from European clubs. In May 2015, Portuguese giants Benfica signed him on a four-year deal for a reported €1.5 million.

However, the young forward struggled to break into the first team. Still a teenager, he was sent out on loan to newly-promoted CD Tondela. In 2017-18 season, he returned to Benfica only to be sent out on loan again - his high level of play took him to Kasimpasa. The Turkish top flight was the ideal stage to demonstrate his talent.

Internationally, he represented Venezuela at youth level and was handed his first cap at senior level in February 2015. Murillo has accumulated 41 appearances for his country, playing in World Cup qualifiers and three times in the Copa América. Today, he is part of the revelation team in the CONMEBOL region seeking a place in the next FIFA World Cup.

Easy decision

The player, who spent the past two years on the books with San Luis said he didn’t need to think twice when Atlas came calling. “As soon as I heard about Atlas’ interest, I didn’t hesitate to make a decision and do everything possible to be here. From day one I am very excited about being here. I’m committed to the team. I‘ve already been warmly welcomed by the coach, and from the president,” he said.

“I made my debut in Mexico against Atlas, so now that I’m on this side I’ve seen what the people are like, what the fans are like. The atmosphere is great. I can’t wait to play in Jalisco, let’s hope it happens soon. From the opening game we should be thinking about qualifying for the Liguilla - we will have the opportunity on Sunday,” he added with reference to this weekend’s Clausura 2024 opener at Necaxa`.
