Joan Laporta believes Barcelona have a better team than Real Madrid

The Catalan club president admitted he’s happy with the new additions ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Update:
The Catalan club president admitted he’s happy with the new additions ahead of the 2023-24 season.

After a summer with lots of signings last year, Barcelona managed to return to the winning column in LaLiga last season, winning the title comfortably after being rock-solid for most of the competition.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta made a competitive team after activating some economic levers that brought some cash to the club to be able to sign important players to fight for the Spanish league and the Champions League.

Things worked pretty well in Spain, with Barcelona finishing on top of the standings with 88 points, 10 ahead of Real Madrid. However, Europe proved to be a very dark destination for Xavi Hernández’s men, as they were kicked out of the UCL in the group stage. After that, they were also eliminated by Manchester United in their first Europa League knockout tie.

Laporta: “We have a better team than Madrid”

Besides lifting the LaLiga trophy, the Catalan giants also won the Spanish Super Cup, defeating their archrivals Real Madrid in the final.

Although Xavi was questioned after Barcelona’s double European elimination, he got all the support from Laporta after winning LaLiga, who believes Barça have a better team than Los Blancos.

We have a better team than Madrid and, individually, we are also better than our rivals by a distance. As a member and a fan I am very satisfied with the team we are building”, Laporta said to Catalan newspaper Sport.

Although Els Blaugrana are still looking to add more talent to their squad and take care of the departure of some players, Laporta admitted being satisfied with the new additions so far:

We already have a very competitive team. We have won the Spanish League and we can continue exercising dominance in this competition. I am focused on making a good team over signing individuals. We have signed Gündogan and Ínigo Martínez and they will give us great performances like the others that will come”.

Besides Ilkay Gundogan and Íñigo Martínez, Barcelona have also signed Brazilian striker Vitor Roque, although his arrival is not expected until 2024, due to the club’s financial issues.

Real Madrid have brought in Brahim Diaz, Arda Güler, Fran García, Joselu Mato, and Jude Bellingham.
