Antena 3 daytime talk show Y Ahora Sonsoles highlighted some of the economic problems that the family of the late José Antonio Reyes have been dealing with since his tragic death in a car accident in 2019. The programme also revealed that three properties belonging to the former Sevilla, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Atlético player are due to go to auction in the coming weeks - among them, Reyes’ former family home, which is currently occupied by his parents. They will be evicted by court order on 26 June.

“They are very worried and are trying to find out what will happen to them. They are in constant contact with their lawyers. They say they don’t know anything - not even when they might be evicted”. Another property, also in Utrera will be auctioned, for 150.000 euros. Details about the third property to go to auction in the coming days, have yet to come to light.

Reyes’ widow “still only just taking it all in”

Reyes’ unexpected, premature death meant that his assets, including 18 properties, were left to his family. His estate was passed on to his three children, but as they were underage, it was his widow Noelia López was handed legal responsibility. However, almost all of the domiciles in Reyes’ property portfolio were mortgaged and payment arrears have continued to build up. Noelia, the player’s second wife, told Antena 3 how she is dealing with the bombshell news of the auctions.

The news took Noelia completely by surprise, as she was unaware that her former husband had debts. “I’m only just finding about everything that is happening and taking it all in,” she said. Reyes’ widow added that she is facing the situation without help as her relationship with her former husband’s family broke down after his death. Noelia, who has been focusing on a new professional project, moved to Baeza, Jaén with her daughters to be closer to her own family.

Noelia, who wed Reyes in June 2017, says that she never had any first-hand knowledge or involvement in her late husband’s economic affairs. “I kept out of his financial affairs as it was none of my business”.
