Neither France nor Spain: the European teams that have bitterly marked Colombia's World Cup history

Mission accomplished – at least for now. Colombia has won its opening two games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, beating Uzbekistan 3-1 and the Democratic Republic of the Congo 1-0 to book an early place in the round of 32in the tournament being hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

It is the fourth time in seven World Cup appearances that La Tricolor has advanced beyond the group stage. However, there is still one important task remaining. Colombia will face Portugal in Miami to decide who finishes top of Group K.

Colombia’s World Cup history against European opponents

The game against Portugal will mark Colombia’s 12th World Cup meeting with a UEFA nation. The South Americans have struggled overall in those encounters, compiling three wins, three draws and five defeats, scoring 15 goals while conceding 18.

That record equates to a 40.74% return against European opposition, taking into account that victories at the 1962, 1990 and 1994 World Cups were worth two points rather than the current three.

Three European rivals have caused repeated heartbreak

The former Yugoslavia became the first European team to face Colombia in multiple World Cups. Their first meeting came at the 1962 tournament in Chile, where Yugoslavia cruised to a 5-0 victory. They met again at Italy 1990, with the Europeans edging a 1-0 win.

Romania also proved to be a recurring obstacle. Colombia entered the 1994 World Cup in the United States among the favorites to win the tournament, but its campaign unraveled after a 3-1 defeat to Romania in the opening game. Four years later, the teams met again in the opening match of France 1998, with Adrian Ilie scoring the only goal in another Romanian victory.

England delivered Colombia’s next major disappointment. The English won 2-0 in Lens at France 1998 thanks to goals from Darren Anderton and David Beckham, eliminating Colombia from the tournament. Their most recent World Cup meeting came in the round of 16 at Russia 2018, when Yerry Mina’s dramatic late equalizer forced a penalty shootout before misses from Matheus Uribe and Carlos Bacca sent England through.

Colombia’s complete World Cup record against European teams

  • Chile 1962: Colombia 4-4 Soviet Union
  • Chile 1962: Colombia 0-5 Yugoslavia
  • Italy 1990: Colombia 0-1 Yugoslavia
  • Italy 1990: Colombia 1-1 Germany
  • USA 1994: Colombia 1-3 Romania
  • USA 1994: Colombia 2-0 Switzerland
  • France 1998: Colombia 0-1 Romania
  • France 1998: Colombia 0-2 England
  • Brazil 2014: Colombia 3-0 Greece
  • Russia 2018: Poland 0-3 Colombia
  • Russia 2018: Colombia 1-1 England (England won 4-3 on penalties)

Portugal showdown will decide first place

Colombia will face Portugal in its final Group K game on Saturday, June 27, at 7:30 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The winner will finish first in the group. Colombia enters the game with a two-point advantage over Portugal, meaning a draw is enough for La Tricolor to secure the top spot.
