Josko Gvardiol has been offered to Real Madrid, adding another high-profile name to a transfer market that is already beginning to tilt in the Spanish club’s direction.

The move has caught attention at Valdebebas. Real Madrid’s clear priority is strengthening their back line, particularly at center back, but there was little expectation that one of Europe’s most coveted defenders would be presented as an option so early in the window.

Real Madrid’s defensive rebuild gathers pace

The need for change at Real Madrid is being driven by a broader squad rebuild following a season that has exposed depth issues across several areas. That context is fueling early movement around potential defensive targets.

Gvardiol has been on Madrid’s radar for some time. Before his transfer to Manchester City in the summer of 2023, the Croatian international was already being tracked by the Spanish giants. However, City ultimately secured his signature from RB Leipzig for around €90 million (almost $105 million), shutting down competition from several European clubs.

Injury setbacks cloud Gvardiol’s season

Now 23, Gvardiol has endured a difficult campaign due to a tibia injury that has kept him sidelined for an extended period. He underwent surgery in January and has yet to return to competitive action.

There is growing concern that he could miss the upcoming World Cup in North America, although that decision has not been finalized. The Croatian national team staff are expected to wait as long as possible before making a final call.

Bernabéu history and long-term admiration

Gvardiol is already familiar with the Santiago Bernabéu, having scored there while playing as a left back. The goal came from distance with his right foot, a striking moment that highlighted his technical ability despite his defensive role.

Real Madrid’s interest is not new. The club has followed him since his breakthrough years at Dinamo Zagreb, where he eventually earned a €36 million ($42 million) move to RB Leipzig in 2021.

His current Manchester City contract runs until June 2028. There are no formal negotiations underway at this stage, but his representatives are actively assessing the market, with Real Madrid considered one of his preferred destinations.

Bernardo Silva also offered as market activity builds

Another name reportedly offered to Real Madrid, as previously revealed, is Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese playmaker is exploring options for his next move, and one of the clearest signals so far is his rejection of a Barcelona approach.

Guardiola uncertainty adds to City backdrop

Manchester City’s internal situation is also being closely watched. Uncertainty around Pep Guardiola’s long-term future continues to circulate, with reports in Manchester suggesting he could remain for no more than one additional season.

That lingering question is already influencing squad planning, with some players beginning to consider potential exits as the summer market approaches.
