LA Galaxy vs LAFC: preview

Los Angeles FC visit city rivals LA Galaxy on the back of an unbeaten start to the MLS season, but face a team they are yet to beat away from home.

LAFC go to Dignity Health Sports Park sitting top of the Western Conference, having won four and drawn one of their opening five games. Most recently, the Black and Gold triumphed at Orlando City on Sunday, second-half goals by Ilie and Kwadwo Opoku completing a 4-2 victory at Exploria Stadium.

Steve Cherundolo’s men also lead the Supporters’ Shield standings, which combine the regular-season records of the teams in both MLS conferences.

However, LAFC’s six previous trips road games against Galaxy have yielded two draws and four defeats - a barren run that began with a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired 4-3 victory for the five-time MLS champions, who had trailed 3-0 with half an hour to go. Last season, the teams drew 1-1 at Dignity Health Sports Park, Samuel Grandsir’s goal cancelling out Mamadou Fall’s opener for the visitors.

Hosts Galaxy, who like LAFC missed out on the playoffs last season, sit third in the West, with three wins and two defeats so far in 2022. After consecutive losses to Seattle Sounders and Orlando in weeks three and four, they bounced back with a 3-1 win away to 2021 MLS Cup finalists Portland Timbers on Sunday, Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández scoring twice for Greg Vanney’s team, either side of an own goal by Timbers defender Bill Tuiloma.

The 14th edition of the Los Angeles derby, a fixture playfully dubbed ‘El Tráfico’, will see Hernández come up against fellow Mexican star Carlos Vela for the first time since the pair moved to MLS. Hernández and Vela last met in 2013, while at Manchester United and Real Sociedad, respectively.
