The former United States international is among the chief contenders to take over at the California-based franchise for the remainder of the 2022 MLS season.

San Jose Earthquakes have hit rock bottom since the departure of Matías Almeyda earlier this year and sit in last place in the Western Conference with a record of four wins, seven draws and seven defeats for 19 points. Alex Covelo was appointed as the interim coach while the California-based franchise looked for the right candidate to take over the job.

Donovan the chosen one

San Jose Earthquakes have interviewed five managers and Landon Donovan seems to be the right man for the job for the people in charge. After retiring, the 40-year-old got his coaching license and is in his third season managing the San Diego Loyal in the USL Championship.

Under Donovan this season the team sits in third place in the Western Conference with 34 points after 19 fixtures. His all-time record as manager of the San Diego side is 30 wins, 23 draws and 15 defeats and this is not the first time Donovan has been linked to a return to Major League Soccer as a manager.

Last season the former USMNT legend was among the candidates to take over the Real Salt Lake managerial job, but in the end the bosses appointed Pablo Mastroeni. Donovan has said in the past that he is ready to take a job in MLS and San Jose was the team he emerged at as player, winning the 2001 and 2003 MLS Cup.
