Leagues Cup round of 16: dates, times, schedule, bracket, stand-out games
As the 2024 Leagues Cup reaches the last 16, we take a look at the games coming up this week - and focus in on a trio of appetising ties.
The round of 16 of the 2024 Leagues Cup kicks off today, Monday August 12, as clubs from Major League Soccer and the Liga MX continue their quest to be crowned the best team in North America. Ahead of the competition’s second knockout stage, we take a look at three of the most mouth-watering clashes in prospect:
Seattle Sounders vs Pumas - Monday August 12, 10:30 p.m. ET
The round gets underway with a match-up between Seattle Sounders and Pumas UNAM, who in 2022 squared off in the final of the CONCACAF Champions League. The two-time MLS Cup winners, one of United States soccer’s most successful franchises, go up against a club that are among Mexico’s ‘big four’ historic teams. Seven-time domestic champions, Pumas have won the CONCACAF title on three occasions - but lost to Seattle, 5-2 on aggregate, in the Champions League decider two years ago.
In the round of 32, the Sounders were 3-1 winners over 2022 MLS champions Los Angeles FC, and Pumas beat Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0.
FC Cincinnati vs Philadelphia Union - Tuesday August 13, 7:30 p.m. ET
On Tuesday, the Leagues Cup’s two earliest kick-offs are both all-MLS affairs in Ohio - and are both hugely attractive propositions. At TQL Stadium, FC Cincinnati welcome Philadelphia Union to the Buckeye State, for a clash that pits the most recent winners of the MLS Supporters’ Shield against a Union team that is in the shake-up for silverware season after season. In the Leagues Cup, indeed, the Pennsylvanians were semi-finalists last year, ultimately finishing on the podium after beating Monterrey in the third-place playoff.
Cincinnati booked their last-16 spot by beating Mexicans Santos Laguna on penalties - after a 1-1 draw - while Philadelphia saw off Montréal CF 2-0.
Columbus Crew vs Inter Miami - Tuesday August 13, 7:30 p.m. ET
In Tuesday’s other tie on Ohioan soil, the defending MLS champions host the team that have been the US and Canadian league’s stand-out performers in 2024. Columbus Crew take on Inter Miami, the Leagues Cup title holders, in a match-up that’s likely to be very closely fought. In the teams’ most recent meeting, it was Miami who came out on top, winning 2-1 in Fort Lauderdale in June.
Miami, who have so far been without injured superstar Lionel Messi in this year’s Leagues Cup, qualified for the round of 16 by beating Toronto FC 4-3 in a thrilling round-of-32 tie. Columbus, meanwhile, thumped Sporting Kansas City 4-0.
