Leeds United vs Manchester United: as it happened

Erik ten Hag post-match coming up shortly...

as.com

Leeds post-match comments:

"We played really well for 80 minutes, we gave it our all.

We had some big chances, in the second half especially. They are the moments that change games. We had them pinned in during the second half.

They had one chance and you can't give a player who's got that much confidence so much time in the box. But we have to take the positives.

We can be proud in a week that's been tricky for the club.

If we score, maybe we go on to win the game.

Our fans have always been with us, we know we have them behind us.

Skoobs and his staff have done brilliantly, let's see what next week brings.

Luke Ayling, Leeds United captain

"I'm really proud of the group. I thought we had more of the game and tried to win it. I thought we were on top for long periods and created chances. I'm deflated that we haven't got anything out of it.

It's helpful for everybody that we know which direction of travel we're going in. But the players are calm and the club need to make the right decision. It's a great group of players who'll leave nothing in the tank."

We thought Rutter could get in behind a little bit more but I thought we were comfortable still and would nick things."

Michael Skubala, Leeds caretaker manager

There may be a light at the end of the tunnel

According to Mike McGrath of The Daily Telegraph, ex-Ten Hag assistant Alfred Schreuder was at Elland Road to watch the game and is a "serious contender" for the job. Watch this space...

And as for Man Utd:

Are we now saying they're title contenders?

Manchester City play later today but surely now Manchester United must be considered as one of the favourites to win the league, right? Especially if Arsenal's blip turns into a run and Marcus Rashford keeps scoring at such an amazing rate.

Here's how things look for Leeds:

They sit just one point above the drop and play Everton away in their next fixture, which is going to be a huge tie.

A six-pointer, if you'll allow the cliché. it remains to be seen if they will have a new manager by then or if it will be Skoobs in charge. I like Skoobs.

Leeds United release a statement at full-time

"Both clubs strongly condemn chanting from both sets of fans regarding historic tragedies at today’s game. Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and we will continue to work together with our respective fan groups and the Premier League, and other authorities on eradicating it from football."

This comes after the Manchester United fans were singing about the deaths of Leeds fans in Turkey; Leeds fans were also singing about the Munich Air Disaster, two wholly unacceptable things to do.

as.com

As for Leeds, they will rue all the missed chances and mistakes Manchester United made due to their excellent pressure throughout. Given the chances, Manchester United will feel very lucky to have managed the win today.

They are still without a manager, but perhaps two strong performances against a good side can convince the new coach that they have more to give in the season. Going off the two performances under Skoobs and the gang, that certainly looks to be the case.

And that's all!

Manchester United get the win in an incredibly feisty game.

Whether they deserved the win or not is up for debate, but what's certain is that they will be delighted to get out of Elland Road with all three points and all their limbs intact.

Meslier comes out of his goal to head away a long ball from Manchester United. Huge cheers from the crowd.

as.com
76

Leeds have just come into the game again after a late surge of energy from Gnonto, who left his position to go over and help out on the right wing. When he does that, he leaves my 'close' side of the pitch, and looks absolutely tiny.

as.com
75

Fred shoves Aaronson off the ball after a ludicrous back-heel touch from Gnonto kept the ball in play. What a player Leeds have got on their hands.

as.com

The game is slowly losing its structure... I can feel it in the air.

67

Ayling goes to ground well to stop Garnacho from reaching a dangerous pass behind the defence.

as.com
66

Rutter does excellently to spin away and play wide to Gnonto, who whips in a dangerous cross.

The Italian then finds the ball on the edge of the box after a clearance and hits a shot into De Gea's hands.

as.com

Koch shepherds Rashford well as the Englishman looked to get in behind with the ball down Leeds' left.

Manchester United are growing into the game.

Bruno Fernandes is down, holding his face.

as.com
52

Fred flicks the ball out for a corner but the linesman gives a goal kick, a decision which does not go down well with the crowd, as you might imagine.

as.com
51

AYLING HITS A SHOT INCHES WIDE!

Manchester United can't cope!

A Leeds free-kick lands at Ayling's feet but his shot bobbles just wide of thr post. De Gea couldn't see it.

as.com
49

ANOTHER CHANCE FOR LEEDS!

ANOTHER MISTAKE!

Bamford gets the ball after another away side error in buildup but his touch is poor and Ten Hag's team recover.

What a fiery game of football. It was everything we expected, to be honest, with huge tackles flying left, right and centre.

Leeds will be happy with that half, they battled well and matched Manchester United, keeping them mostly at bay despite a few late chances.

As for Ten Hag, he may be feeling that his side can do more in both attack and defence, with their biggest chance coming from a Leeds United error.

Let's see if we get any goals in the second half!

MESLIER WITH A HUGE SAVE!!!

Wöber makes a huge mistake and leaves Bruno Fernandes free on his own with Meslier. The Portuguese fires a low shot to the corner but Meslier stops it incredibly!

as.com
43

WHAT A HUGE CHANCE FOR LEEDS!!

SUMMERVILLE AGAIN!

The winger burned past Malacia and his shot is saved onto Maguire, who stops the ball with his back - he knew nothing about it.

What a huge opportunity to open the scoring.

as.com
42

Wöber steps in to stop Rashford from finding space behind the Leeds defence and Summerville collects the loose ball.

as.com
41

Ayling wins the ball again as Manchester United break down the left. He's having a great game so far.

as.com
40

Rashford is down after a heavy tackle from McKennie, who is booked.

He looks OK to continue.

as.com
39

Bruno tries a chipped shot and it's easily saved by Meslier.

The player wants a handball... not given.

as.com
38

Harrison trips over his own feet and allows Manchester United in down the right. The cross comes in and Meslier deals with the ball.

as.com
38

Koch heads away a dangerous cross from Dalot. Manchester United have found some energy from somewhere.

as.com
37

A quick change of shirt and a drink of water and he's back.

as.com
37

Play is stopped as Tyler Adams gets blood cleared from his mouth and face. It's one of those games.

as.com
35

BIG CHANCE!

Harry Maguire makes a huge error and allows Harrison in behind on his own.

Luckily for the defender, he gets back and blocks the shot. That was a close call.

as.com
34

Rashford tries to chip the ball across the box from the left but Ayling gets in the way to stop the attempted pass to Weghorst.

as.com
33

Handbags now between Ayling and Malacia, who are fighting over a throw-in. Nice guy Marcus Rashford comes in and calms the situation. Everyone is friends now.

as.com
32

Again, Ayling gets on the cross and again his cross is poor.

Rashford breaks before switching play to Sancho, who is stopped by Gnonto.

as.com
31

Another free-kick to Leeds, this time for a tackle from Sancho on Gnonto. Practically in the same place as the same foul a minute ago.

as.com
30

Ayling gets on the end of the cross to put the ball back in the box but his effort is spooned high and wide.

as.com
29

Sabitzer brings down Gnonto is what is surprisingly not a booking, given what we've seen so far. Free-kick to Leeds on the left.

as.com
27

Harrison harries Harry Maguire and almost steals the ball from him inside the box. Luckily, De Gea is on hand to hoof it 50 yards forward.

as.com
26

Shaw heads away a clipped ball from Harrison that was heading for Bamford behind the defence.

The resulting ball ends with Bruno Fernandes, who crumbles to the ground after a tackle from Summerville.

as.com
26

We've had 9 fouls already so far (3 by Leeds and 6 by Manchester United) and they've all been strong challenges.

as.com
25

Bruno gets angry at the ref after bringing down Patrick Bamford.

as.com
24

Some sustained possession for Manchester United ends in a huge challenge from Firpo on Sancho (again): Quite the pair of battles brewing on either wing versus the Leeds full-backs.

as.com
22

Wöber slices a clearance and Manchester United recover the ball high up the pitch.

Leeds charge back to assume their positions in their defensive shape and plug the gaps, stopping any danger..

as.com
21

The free-kick is poor but a crazy touch from Rashford leaves the ball at Bamford's feet, but he can't get a good swing of his leg and the danger is cleared.

as.com
21

Fred goes into the naughty book for a late challenge on Summerville as the winger burned past him.

as.com
20

Bruno Fernandes receives the ball from the right and the Portuguese drags a weak shot wide of Meslier's goal. A half-chance that probably should have been put on target.

as.com
19

McKennie must have run 500 miles by now, he has been making tackles all over the pitch so far.

as.com
17

Firpo booked for a late tackle on Sancho. That looked sore.

as.com
15

Pressure from Bamford causes De Gea to loft the ball out for a throw, causing all the Manchester United players to complain.

Leeds are holding a 4-3-3 mid-block and while Manchester United are having more of the ball (64/36 possession), they haven't yet found a consistent way through.

as.com
14

Harrison tries the "Weghorst vs Argentina", trying to secretly slip in Bamford, but it's cut out by the opposition.

as.com
13

Free-kick for Leeds on the edge of the box after Harrison is tripped by Fred. This will be whipped towards goal.

as.com
12

Manchester United break down the left, but a sloppy pass from Weghorst whizzes past Rashford, who throws his arms in the air in despair.

as.com
10

Harrison fires in an early cross from the left towards Bamford, but the ball falls into David De Gea's grasp. Easy for Manchester United.

as.com
9

McKennie does well to fight off Fred as he bursts down the right. Leeds win a throw high up the pitch, which is sent into the box and cleared.

as.com
8

The Ayling vs Rashford battle is, once again, shaping up to be a ferocious one.

as.com
8

Manchester United attack and Leeds scramble back, missing challenges all over the pitch. Weghorst plays wide to Sancho who sees his cross blocked by Firpo.

as.com
6

Malacia is receiving treatment; the foul wasn't nasty, it was just heavy. He looks to be OK.

as.com
5

McKennie provokes groans from the fans after he plays a heavy pass that misses Summerville completely.

He immediately gets back on their good side after a big, big challenge on Malacia. Ouch.

as.com

A long free kick is misjudged by Dalot who allows Wöber to step in an play a cross across goal. Maguire doesn't deal with it and the ball falls to Summerville, who smashes over the bar from a few yards out.

as.com

David De Gea / Manchester United

It's a special day for the Spanish shot stopper...

It is David De Gea's 400th appearance today for a single club, and he becomes the first goalkeeper and the first non-British player ever to achieve this!

as.com

Leeds United goalkeeper pre-match interview:

"It's rare to play twice against the same team in the same week, it's a second battle.

We want to beat them. We analysed and talked about the first game, I think we're ready.

We want a positive start, we will be ready to be aggressive from the start.

We want the fans to make a lot of noise, it's important for us. The noise can change the type of the game."

Ilan Meslier, Leeds United goalkeeper

And here's some Manchester United news: they are reportedly keen on Barcelona superstar, Ansu Fati, who has fallen out of favour in Cataluña.

as.com

Weston McKennie, Leeds' newest signing, sounds like a lovely boy. And he's USMNT captain Tyler Adams' best friend.

Here's what he had to say about moving from Juventus to Leeds.

as.com

And now for the bottom:

Leeds, on the other hand, need a lifeboat. Maybe it's Skoobs and the gang, maybe somebody else. They've tried for Andoni Iraola at Rayo, but it is proving a difficult operation.

Sitting just one point above the drop zone, it becomes interesting to dissect exactly why Jesse Marsch claimed that they were not in a relegation battle, because it looks like one to me.

A win would see Manchester United temporarily jump past Manchester City, who have been as slippery as Arsenal in recent weeks.

Team news

Leeds:

Pascal Struijk will miss out after suffering concussion in the last game. Junior Firpo is expected to replace him.

Marc Roca, Liam Cooper and Luis Sinisterra all have a chance of making the game today and will be assessed in the buildup.

Manchester United:

Antony misses out due to injury, as do Martial and McTominay. Added to that list are Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek.

Ten Hag will not be able to call on Casemiro due to him serving a suspension.

Pre-game numbers to whet the appetite:

Since we've got about 15 minutes or so before the teams come out, let's have a look at some stats that will surely get us going...

- Leeds have won just two of their last 18 league matches (D6, L10).

- All five of Manchester United's away wins this campaign have been by a single-goal.

- Leeds could equal their club record nine Premier League games without a win in the same season. Ouch.

- Rashford has already scored 22 goals, which is the same as his best ever season total (2019-20)

- The last time Leeds beat their northern rivals was in 2010, when a Jermaine Beckford goal put Leeds, then in League One, England's third division, through to the next round of the FA Cup.

- Man Utd have scored over 2.5 goals in six of their last seven matches against Leeds in all competitions

Leeds' Super Bowl links

A slightly less important sporting event than Leeds United vs Manchester United is happening later, called the Super Bowl. Heard of it?

Well, believe it or not, Leeds United has some NFL links, and they're not that Tyler Adams might have played it when he was a lad.

The San Francisco 49ers Investment Group (49ers Enterprises) actually own a stake in the club! And rumour has it that a full-scale buyout is on the horizon. Let's see if the US influence in the Premier League continues!

REUTERS

What happened to Marsch at Leeds?

Well, it never went right for the American at Leeds. He was brought in as a replacement for Marcelo Bielsa, who had achieved deity status at the club after securing promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.

His style was seen by the Leeds board as a nice transition from the high-octane Bielsa-ball, but it never took off. His ultra-narrow side was routinely chopped apart by other teams, who sliced Leeds open every week on the counter-attack, or a simple ball to the back post.

The club sat perilously over the relegation zone, despite the coach saying they were not in a relegation battle, results failed to come by. A few decent games against Bournemouth and Liverpool were enough to sustain his tenure over the World Cup break but since the restart, Leeds had looked frail and lacking confidence, with players increasingly becoming more frustrated as the matches trickled by.

And so, the board decided to relieve Marsch of his duties after a predictable loss to Nottingham Forest, in which Leeds looked decent without looking dangerous.

Michael Skubala, or Skoobs, as Jesse once called him, is in charge of a head coach triumvirate with Chris Armas and Paco Gallardo.

as.com

So, what happened last time?

Well, it was a thriller. Manager-less Leeds got off to a flying start, scoring in the opening minute as Willy Gnonto fired them ahead. Manchester United huffed and puffed but couldn't get past the revitalised Leeds setup under caretaker manager Michael Skubala, who set them up to defend in a more organised way than Jesse Marsch had managed.

Things went from bad to worse for Erik ten Hag's side as Varane tapped the ball into his own goal from close range to make it 0-2, but Rashford soon got one back, putting the away side on the ropes for the final stages of the game.

Jadon Sancho - remember him? - came on to give a new life to Manchester United and he grabbed the equaliser a few minutes from time, saving what would have been a bit of an embarrassment and a first home defeat for Manchester United at Old Trafford against Leeds since the 1970s.

OLI SCARFF / AFP

We've seen this game before, right?

Yes. Last Wednesday.

Leeds play Manchester United twice in a week due to a quirk in the calendar: Queen Elizabeth II's funeral meant that the fixture had to be moved due to policing numbers (this game always requires a lot of them) and that's why the two sides are playing each other twice in a week. I wonder if they even got out of their kits.
