Lisandro Martinez injury update: Is it an achilles or ankle injury?

The Argentine defender was stretchered down the Old Trafford tunnel and Erik ten Hag admitted that he expects him to miss the next game, at least.

Manchester United suffered a nightmare second half at the Theatre of Dreams on Thursday, losing a comfortable lead and suffering key injuries in the Europa League tie with Sevilla.

Erik ten Hag’s men took the lead with two well-taken Marcel Sabitzer goals in the opening 45 but it all unravelled in the second half as the visitors scored twice late on to secure a draw.

Most alarming, perhaps, were injuries suffered by Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. The latter appeared to be in tears as he was helped from the pitch by his Argentina teammates Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel, before being taken down the tunnel on a stretcher.

What happened to Lisandro Martinez?

Shortly after Sevilla had got a goal back in the quarter-final tie, Martinez turned on the ball under no pressure and crumpled to the ground. There was no obvious reason for the Argentine to go down and he was immediately surrounded by United physios and his teammates.

After leaving the pitch he was able to stand on his own, but looked devastated as he stood with his hands on his head. United fans in attendance will have feared the worst.

The full extent of his injury is still unknown but Ten Hag told BT Sport after the game: “Licha Martinez, it doesn’t look that great.”

“I cannot tell what it is but it is not achilles. No that is not the area,” he added.

“I think [with] the injury he will not play on Sunday. But again, I can’t say a realistic diagnosis and I prefer to wait. And then we are clear. We will know exactly what it is.”

Manchester United face Nottingham Forest this Sunday, knowing that they need a win to keep them in pole position for a top four finish.
