Liverpool and Chelsea break Premier League records against Sheffield United and Manchester United

Cole Palmer wrote his name into the record books against The Red Devils as Jürgen Klopp’s team moved back above Arsenal at the top.

There aren’t often Premier League fixtures played on a Thursday night, but both Liverpool and Chelsea broke records against Sheffield United and Manchester United respectively in the two games played on 4 April.

What record did Cole Palmer set against Manchester United?

Mauricio Pochettino’s team played out what may ultimately prove to be an all-time Premier League classic against the Red Devils at Stamford Bridge. Two goals inside the first 20 minutes from Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer initially put them in control but United had turned things around by the midway point of the second half thanks to an Alejandro Garnacho double either side of a Bruno Fernandes header.

Erik Ten Hag’s team held their lead until the ninth minute of injury time and were hit by two devastating sucker punches. Palmer converted his second penalty of the game to draw Chelsea level and still had to time to fire in a deflected winner on 100 minutes and 39 seconds, the latest winning goal on record in the Premier League.

What are the latest goals ever scored in the Premier League?

Since exact goal times started being used in the English top flight in 2006/07, only two players have found the net later in a game - Dirk Kuyt (101:48) for Liverpool against Arsenal in April 2011 and Oli McBurnie (102:07) for Sheffield United versus West Ham in January this year. Both were equalising goals.

Liverpool break possession record against Sheffield United

Speaking of The Blades, they were given no hope of getting anything against Liverpool at Anfield in Thursday’s other game, and so it proved, although they did at least put up a good fight. After falling behind to Darwin Núñez’s opener, they surprisingly levelled through Conor Bradley’s own goal, only for Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo to secure a relatively late win for Jürgen Klopp’s team.

Although they made hard work of their victory, The Reds had 83.1% possession in the game, a Premier League record since such data started being collected in 2003/04.

The win moved Liverpool back above Arsenal at the top of the table. With eight matches left to play, they are two points clear of The Gunners and three ahead of Manchester City in one of their highest title races in Premier League history.
