Update:

The Scottish soccer icon Sir Kenny Dalglisha Liverpool legend and runner‑up for the 1983 Ballon d’Or — announced Tuesday that he is currently receiving treatment for cancer.

Request for privacy to be respected

“As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well,” he wrote on social media. “Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand. Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected”.

It is thought that Kenny accidentally posted a photograph of a hospital appointment letter, which he quickly took down.

The 75-year-old also showed his gratitude and admiration for the medical staff who have been looking after him: “As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves”.

Liverpool’s greatest

Dubbed ‘The King’ by worshiping Liverpool fans, Dalglish is widely considered the greatest player to have ever played for the club. He joined the Reds in the summer of 1977 from Celtic for £440,000 ($593,000) - a British transfer fee record.

King Kenny made 515 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 172 goals and helping the club win six league titles and three European Cups, among many other honors.

He also managed Liverpool in two separate stints, winning three league championships across 381 matches on the sideline.

The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will continue to be, with Sir Kenny and his family,” the club said in a statement emphasizing respect for his privacy.

Before his Liverpool years, Dalglish spent nine seasons with his hometown club, Celtic — the only other club of his career.

On the international stage, he still holds Scotland’s all‑time appearance record with 102 caps and shares the national scoring record with Denis Law at 30 goals.
