Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group poised to make a move into Spanish soccer

UK media report that the American group continues to take steps to take ownership of a LaLiga club with a ‘due diligence’ process completed.

Update:

The Daily Mail has revealed that Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the American conglomerate that owns Liverpool FC, Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Penguins along with other sports entities, has completed a positive due diligence test ahead of a possible purchase of Getafe CF.

Contacts between the parties began months ago and intensified when FSG officials met with Ángel Torres in August. According to information published by the British media, after that meeting, the Americans concluded that, if they were to acquire a club in Spain, Getafe would be the chosen one.

The price of a possible transaction is not yet known, although those close to the negotiation assure that, if FSG decides to take the step, the purchase would practically be a mere formality.

Rumors and context

The first rumors about FSG’s interest in Getafe surfaced in June, although talks only took shape in the summer. In previous statements, Geta president Ángel Torres had already spoken about the possibility of a sale in the future, making it clear that he will step down as president once the current construction work on the stadium is completed.

A boost from Real Madrid

Another key factor in this approach was the recommendation received from Real Madrid. José Ángel Sánchez, the club’s general manager, reportedly spoke very positively about Getafe’s management and institutional integrity to Liverpool’s owners, which reinforced the Americans’ positive impression.

For now, FSG’s interest has not gone beyond the exploratory phase, but the completed due diligence process and positive references received suggest a more than realistic medium-term scenario. With a date marked on the calendar—early 2028, when the construction work is completed—Getafe’s future could involve becoming the next European asset of the Fenway Sports Group, a move that, if finalized, would add a new major player to the international ownership map of LaLiga.
