Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea: as it happened

Another Potter draw

Opta - Since his first season in the Premier League in 2019-20, no manager has overseen more goalless draws than Graham Potter (16).

FT: Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea

The result doesn't help either team. Chelsea had the ball in the net in the first half but it was ruled out for offside.

Mudryk was exciting when he came on for his Chelsea debut.

The game lacked quality and the draw leaves the sides a long way off the Champions League places.

The cutting edge was missing in the final third at Anfield on what was a frustrating early afternoon for the home fans.

Both their Premier League meetings finished in draws last season.

Liverpool draw again

Klopp's side move up to 8th place for now with the point. Chelsea stay 10th.

And there's the full-time whistle!

His shot is blocked in the box but it doesn't matter because he is offside.

Liverpool's corner is played short. Chelsea clear it. Liverpool win it back, but it eventually ends up in Kepa's hands.

It hasn't been a good game at all. Both sides need a win but the clock is ticking down at Anfield.

Klopp is furious on the sideline as Jorginho and Nunez battle it out and the German coach thinks it should be a Liverpool ball.

There will be five minutes added on.

Jones flies into Gallagher and Cucurella is not happy. There is some pushing and shoving. Jones picks up a yellow.

Trent floats a free into the box. Chelsea clear the danger.

It's a really nice move between Mudryk and Chukwuemeka but the latter falls over in the box and Chelsea miss out on another opportunity at breaking the deadlock.

Chelsea change

Azpilicueta comes on to make his 500th appearance for Chelsea and gets the captain's armband.

Nunez's cross from the left makes its way to the back post. Trent leans back and his shot flies over the bar.

Liverpool make triple change

Graham Potter still has a couple of ideas up his sleeve too.

Liverpool look ready to make more changes.

It's finely poised at Anfield. Where will the winner come from? Mudryk and Nunez have looked lively since coming on.

Nunez makes a darting run across the Chelsea backline and runs towards goal on the left before firing an effort to the near post. Kepa saves well at his near post.

Liverpool change

Trent comes on to try to deal with the threat of Mudryk on the left.

Ziyech sends a teasing ball to the back post. Mudryk takes a touch instead of shooting first time and it goes out for a goalkick.

Nunez flicks it inside for Gakpo, who shoots towards the bottom left. It’s an easy one for Kepa. 0-0

James Milner picks up a yellow for a foul on Mudryk, who is looking very lively.

It's Milner's first yellow card this season. Liverpool are struggling with the pace and trickery of Mudryk.

He does so well to get by Milner and Gomez in the box but can only hit the side netting.

What a goal that would have been on his debut! 0-0

Liverpool change

Darwin Núñez replaces Naby Keita.

Keita has a shot on the edge of the box which is blocked by Mudryk.

Ziyech shoots!

It would have been a superb goal but he can't make it count.

Chelsea played Klopp’s side four times in 2021-22 and drew them all in either 90 or 120 minutes, with Liverpool winning both cup finals after a penalty shoot-out.

Mudryk is starting on the left for Chelsea. He's highly-rated. Let's see if he can have an impact on this game as the sides look for the opener.

ON Mykhailo Mudryk

Mudryk is coming on

Mudryk is set for his Chelsea debut.

Liverpool have a corner on the right. Milner to take. Chelsea are on the back foot now. The Blues are able to clear the danger. 0-0

There is still a long way to go in this one and Chelsea are looking to extend their unbeaten Premier League run against Liverpool to four games (one win, two draws).

The cross is sent in by Robertson. It falls to Gakpo, who heads over from close range.

Gallagher fouls Elliott. Liverpool win a free out near the left touchline.

Chelsea deal with Liverpool's cross from the left.

I have no changes to report at the break.

Liverpool get us underway for the second half!

HT: Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea

Chelsea had a goal ruled out for offside and have been the better team but have failed to break the deadlock at Anfield.

And there's the whistle for half-time!

Ziyech is on set-piece duties again. His corner from the right is easily collected by Alisson in the air.

Keita clips a beautiful ball wide to Salah on the right. He cuts onto his left but sends it high and over the bar from just inside the box.

There will be four minutes added on!

Thiago Silva heads Elliott's ball from the left away. It's a vital interception.

Robertson is involved again. He plays a neat one-two with Salah but the Egyptian's ball has too much on it and Kepa is able to collect. The Anfield crowd sing Robertson's name as he looks to create an opener.

Andy Robertson is flagged for offside on the left.

The ball falls to Thiago the edge of the box. He shoots but it's easy for his compatriot Kepa. 0-0

Match stat

Mo Salah is aiming to become the first Liverpool player since Ian Rush in October 1990 to net against Chelsea in three successive league meetings.

Ziyech sends in a ball towards the far post. Badiashile, six yards out, heads it goalward but his header is saved on the line by Alisson.

Chelsea have another chance. Ziyechwhips in the free from the right. Havertz can't keep his header on target and it goes wide.

Hall is caught by Keita. Chelsea win another free. Hall is only 18 but has been lively so far on the left.

Chelsea have been the better side in the opening 30 minutes and also had a goal ruled out for offside.

Cucurella is down receiving treatment after Salah tries to flick the ball, but he catches the Spaniard instead.

We've had no goals yet but there have been FIVE in just 20 minutes in the Championship game between Coventry and Norwich!

Alisson saves easily from Gallagher's shot.

Anfield can feel that the home team is under pressure but Chelsea have yet to break the deadlock in this early kickoff.

Match stat

Liverpool’s next goal will be the 850th during the tenure of Jurgen Klopp in all competitions.

He drags his shot wide of the goal from a tight angle on the left.

The through-ball from Mount is superb.

Biggest win for each team:

Chelsea 6-1 Liverpool 1937/38 Division One
Liverpool 6-0 Chelsea 1934/35 Division One

Chelsea’s biggest win at Anfield is 4-1 in 1907/08 (Division One) and 2005/06 (Premier League).

It's another good ball from Milner to Salah. The latter is flagged for offside.

Salah does well on the right and gets a cross in. It's on the edge of the box as Mount goes to clear it but he's fouled and it's a free out. It remains 0-0 at Anfield.

Thiago Silva sends a cross forward to Havertz, who fails to connect with it clearly. Silva's ball is delightful. He's still performing at the highest level at 38. It's impressive stuff.

Klopp's 1000 game as manager

Thiago pushes Ziyech off the ball and Chelsea win a free kick in their own half. 0-0

Ziyech picks it up on the right before firing an inswinger with his left and it flies wide. Liverpool have a goalkick.

Chelsea will be the fresher of the two sides. They have had a week off, whereas Liverpool had an FA Cup game with Wolves at Molineux in midweek.

Gakpo blasts over!

Salah cuts in from the right and pulls it back to Gakpo, who fails to hit the target.

The Dutch forward will have to wait slightly longer for his first Liverpool goal.

Liverpool have gotten away with that, and will give Chelsea an early boost.

And it's offside! Chelsea's goal has been ruled out. Liverpool can breathe again.

Havertz's foot is ahead of the play. 0-0

It's going to VAR!

Liverpool are static and Havertz taps home from close range.

Havertz goal!

Chelsea take the lead!

Havertz puts Chelsea ahead.

Robertson takes out Gallagher with a rash challenge and somehow gets away with it!

It's the 192nd meeting between the sides today.

And we're off!

Kickoff is less than 10 minutes away!

Elliott's 50th

Harvey Elliott will play his 50th match for his boyhood club against Chelsea.

Match preview: Chelsea

Lying level on points with Liverpool, 10th-placed Chelsea are in even worse form than their hosts. The Blues’ Premier League triumph over Crystal Palace on Sunday was their first win in their last five games - a sequence of results that includes a 4-0 FA Cup hammering by Manchester City.

Seven Chelsea players are out of the trip to Anfield due to injury, while loan signing João Félix is suspended after his debut red card in last week’s defeat to Fulham.

Match preview: Liverpool

Two straight Premier League losses have left Liverpool down in ninth, a full 10 points adrift of the Champions League places, in a miserable start to 2023 for the Reds.

A 3-1 reverse at Brentford on 2 January was followed by a 3-0 thumping away to Brighton on Saturday - and, to make things worse, key defender Virgil van Dijk was sidelined by a hamstring injury in the first of those defeats.

Liverpool did pick up an FA Cup win over Wolves on Tuesday, though, Harvey Elliott’s goal earning victory at Molineux in the sides’ third-round replay.

Hendo's programme notes

In his programme notes ahead of today's game, Jordan Henderson writes: "One of the toughest things about playing for a club like Liverpool is the standards are so high. Draws can feel like defeats and actual defeats can feel like the end of the world. As I said, it is tough, but none of us would change it for the world. It’s what makes this club what it is.

"This season in general and the last few weeks in particular have not been easy for us. We have not been at our best, we have not been anywhere near as consistent as we need to be, and the standards that we have set for ourselves have not been met. To say it has not been good enough would be an understatement.

"Again, though, being at Liverpool means this does not just need to improve – it has to improve. We can’t just accept it and settle for falling short either in games or over the course of a season. This club stands for much more than that and anyone who is fortunate enough to play here knows that nothing but the best will ever be good enough.

"I wouldn’t say this is an easy responsibility to carry. It is a great one in more senses than one and you know the level of scrutiny will always be higher and the criticism fiercer than it might be at other clubs, but we also get to use this knowledge as an extra motivation, especially when we have so much awareness of what it feels like to be a Liverpool player when we do meet those exacting standards."

Mudryk on the bench

New Chelsea signing Mijailo Mudryk starts the game on the bench but I have a feeling we'll see him at some stage.

Klopp on his 1000th game

Jurgen Klopp takes charge of his 1000th game today and here is what he had to say:

“It is a massive thing, a crazy number – I feel really blessed. The beard is really grey now, and that was not the case when I arrived here.

"I’m not sure if that is because of the age or because of Liverpool. I did the job I loved for the clubs I loved so I am blessed.”
