Liverpool have had a rough title defense season under Arne Slot, and their most recent draw to Tottenham could prove costly in their chase for a Champions League spot. Richarlison scored a 90th minute goal which earned Spurs a draw while Liverpool set a new club record that paints the picture of how things are going in Merseyside this year.

On the wrong side of history

The Brazilian’s goal right before stoppage time is the eighth goal that Liverpool have conceded in the 90th minute or later in the Primer League this season. That is the most that Liverpool have ever allowed, topping their 2010-11 season.

That year the Reds finished in sixth place with 58 points, and missed out on the Champions League. That is the big fear around Anfield this year. After Sunday’s draw, Liverpool sit fifth in the table with 49 points. Aston Villa are fourth with 51 points, and Chelsea are chasing from behind with 48. There is a potential fifth Champions League spot that could be up for grabs depending on English teams’ performances through European competition, but Liverpool will be more interested in wrapping up a top four spot and avoiding the need for outside help.

After the final whistle boos directed at the players and Arne Slot could be heard ringing around Anfield. Slot acknowledged the boos after the game and mentioned the unfortunate timing of the goal his team concedes. “If the team you are supporting so many times is dropping points against teams you don’t expect them to drop points against, if so many times this happens in the last seconds of a game, then I think we all feel a lot of frustration,” said Slot.
