Luis Díaz admits the most challenging clause of his Bayern Munich contract
The Colombian winger is thriving on the field, but an unexpected clause in his contract is testing him off it.
Luis Díaz currently communicates with his coach and teammates in English and Spanish. However, when he signed his contract through 2029, it included a clause requiring him to learn German. The Colombian winger must attend two or three classes per week and gradually show progress.
According to the German outlet Bild, Bayern are strict about these clauses and closely monitor players’ improvement. If Díaz fails to demonstrate progress – or ultimately does not learn the language – he could face a fine ranging from about $5,400 to $54,000.
When James Rodríguez joined Bayern, he was also required to learn German, though he frequently acknowledged how difficult he found it. Gustavo Puerta, who spent two years in Germany, likewise described the language as complex. The Colombian who managed to master it during his spell at Borussia Dortmund was Adrián Ramos.
The off-field challenge threatening Luis Díaz at Bayern
The 29-year-old has openly discussed the challenges of adapting to German. He recently said he is very happy at Bayern Munich, enjoys the city, and that his family has settled in well, but the language remains one of the few hurdles.
“The most difficult thing for me and my family was, and still is, without a doubt the language… but I knew I would fit in very well here, that I would contribute to the team’s success, as I had done before at Liverpool. So FC Bayern placed their trust in me, and I’m trying to repay that on the field,” he told ESPN.
On the pitch, Díaz is enjoying a sensational season, with 19 goals and 15 assists in 33 games. He has become part of one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking trios. Bayern lead the Bundesliga and have reached the Champions League round of 16. The next challenge comes against Borussia Dortmund – a heavyweight clash.
