Luis Diaz has released a statement calling for the release of his father, one week after his parents were kidnapped in Colombia.

Both of Diaz’ parents were captured by the National Liberation Army (ELN), a left-wing guerrilla group, in their hometown of Barrancas. Diaz’ mother was rescued by police the following day, but his father remains missing.

“Every second, every minute our anxiety grows,” Diaz’s statement read.

“My mother, my brothers and I are desperate, anxious and have no words to describe what we are feeling. This suffering will only end when we have him home with us.

“I beg that they free him immediately, respecting his integrity and ending this painful wait. In the name of love and compassion we ask they reconsider their actions and allow us to have him back.”

‘Libertad para papa’ message after Luton goal

Diaz was not available for Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth on last Wednesday, but returned to the matchday squad for Sunday’s Premier League game against Luton Town.

Liverpool went behind at Kenilworth Road but Diaz, a second half substitute, scored an important equaliser with an injury time header. After scoring he revealed a shirt with the phrase ‘Libertad para papa’ under his Liverpool jersey. That translates to ‘Freedom for my father’ in English.

At the full time whistle the Colombian forward was embraced by teammates and opponents. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised Diaz’ impact in his post-match press conference, but added that a peaceful resolution for his family was the top priority for everyone at the club.

“It’s wonderful – there were no words necessary,” Klopp told reporters. “The signs in Colombia are optimistic but the one thing we all want to hear hasn’t happened yet. We are just waiting for that moment.”
