Luis Malagón: joining América is the ultimate move
The Águilas’ new goalkeeper is thrilled to have joined “the biggest team in the MX League” even though he will start out as second choice in Tano Ortiz’s side.
Luis Ángel Malagón joined América just days before Guillermo Ochoa departed for Europe. The former Necaxa goalkeeper was already in advanced talks with the Coapa board of directors, however, when Memo left to join AC Milan, the possibility of a starting place suddenly seemed a reality, although, in the end, coach Tano Ortiz made Óscar Jiménez his first-choice goalkeeper.

Even though he will be starting out as the team’s second goalkeeper, Malagón is delighted to have joined the club which he considers the most important in Mexican football: “It was a decision made by my representative. Afterwards, he explained the situation to me. I spoke with my family and close friends and we all agree, it’s hard to say no to a club like América. When you play soccer, in the top division, you aspire to reach important things. I think I have made it to the most important team; after this, I mean it from the heart and not to look good, but after América, I don’t think anything more important exists,” the keeper said in an interview for TUDN.
Warm welcome in Coapa
“It really seems like a dream to have signed for the biggest team in Mexico. It’s turned out great for me. I met the coaching staff, I will be team mates with Chato Rodríguez. I was given a very warm welcome, that was really nice. There are two or three team mates who I know from the national team… I’ve joined a massive team, one that is in good shape and my new team mates have received me in the best possible way,” he continued.
Advice from Memo Ochoa
For a few months, Malagón exchanged messages with Memo. He didn’t go into details about what was said but those talks were important in persuading Luis to join the Azulcremas.
“It was a nice chat, we had already talked about two or three topics over a long time, that was after a game there in Aguascalientes... After that happened, I wanted to send him a message and that was how I came to get to know him. He said two or three things, and I swear to you, I feel flattered that he told those things. I feel that because of him, I have a huge commitment to obviously leave an important mark on this club”, he concluded.
