Luis Suárez to Inter Miami? ‘Tata’ Martino opens exit door for Josef Martínez
The Mexican coach spoke about attacking plans for the Florida team and gave some insight into the Venezuelan striker’s future.
Following their defeat against Charlotte FC on Decision Day of Major League Soccer 2023, Inter Miami must now turn their attention to the upcoming season in North America’s top division. As a result, Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino has announced that Josef Martínez will not be continuing with Las Garzas in 2024.
This decision will undoubtedly create an ideal vacancy for the arrival of Luis Suárez, as has been recently mentioned.
During the press conference following the conclusion of the regular campaign, Martino made it clear:
“Josef did not travel because it is highly unlikely that he will be able to continue with the institution for the upcoming season. We had discussions, and the most prudent decision was for him not to participate in this final match, as it would pose an entirely unnecessary risk.”
These words from the Argentine head coach, along with the recent remarks from Jordi Alba openly discussing the possible arrival of Suárez in the MLS for 2024, only serve to fuel rumours about the historic Uruguayan forward and former FC Barcelona star continuing his career with the Fort Lauderdale organization to reunite with Messi, Alba, and Busquets.
Where is Josef Martínez going?
At some point during the season, considering Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández’s injury and the fact that the Mexican’s contract with LA Galaxy is expiring, Josef Martínez’s name was among those mentioned as a potential addition to the Californian institution. It is worth noting, though, that English striker Billy Sharp has recently joined the ranks of the Dignity Health Sports Park as a significant attacking option.
Another crucial factor for Josef will be prioritizing a club where he can maintain consistent playing time, as in the most recent FIFA international break, he only played just over three minutes for the Venezuelan national team in the South American World Cup qualifiers. Salomón Rondón is the starting striker, and Sergio Córdova is also a strong contender for that position.
