Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol, Jérémy Doku... and Matheus Nunes. Man City’s squad template for 2023-2024 is complete. “Manchester City is pleased to announce the signing of Matheus Nunes, from Wolverhampton Wanderers, on a five-year contract,” the Mancunian side reported in a statement. It was a much-needed signing after losing Kevin de Bruyne, who faces several months out with a hamstring injury.

City’s summer shopping list

After having their an initial offer of £47 million turned down, Manchester City raised their bid for the Portuguese midfielder to £53 million. It means that in total, the Sky Blues, who recently paid £77.6 million for Josko Gvardiol, £55.5 million for Jérémy Doku and around £25 million for Mateo Kovacic (plus £5 million in add-ons), have splashed out over £211 million in revamping the squad in the summer window. Wolves will retain 10% of any future sale of Matheus Nunes. Another interesting development is that player will wear the No.27 shirt - which previous belonged to João Cancelo, Barcelona’s primary transfer target...

Nunes was emphatically described as, “One of the best players in the world today” by City manager Pep Guardiola at the start of 2022 when the player was still at Sporting Clube Lisbon. Manchester City incorporates a player who shone under Julen Lopetegui in his first season in the Premier League. Nunes, who arrived at Molineux for 45 million euros in August 2022, scored one goal and gave an assist in 39 games.

Easy decision to make

In the first interview granted to the club’s media department, the 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder acknowledged that the opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola, one of the best coaches in history, and alongside some of the best players of the world was something he could not reject. “There’s a lot of factors [for signing], being in the Champions of course, I mean, it’s amazing for me to even think to come here.   The coach as well. I mean it’s a huge club, it has a lot of the best you can get, the best opportunities, the best structure. So I think there’s a lot of factors that influenced my decision to come here,” he explained.
