The Carabao Cup third round tie of the round sees Premier League heavyweights Manchester City and Chelsea face off at Etihad Stadium. The Citizens are hoping to regain the trophy they won for four years on the spin between 2018 and 2021, while Chelsea, beaten on penalties by Liverpool in last year’s final, are bidding for a first victory in the competition since 2015, when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the Wembley showpiece.

Manchester City vs Chelsea preview

Manchester City may rotate, Erling Haaland unlikely to play

As is often the case in the Carabao Cup, the ‘top’ teams are likely to rotate their squads, even more so given the congested nature of the fixture schedule this season. The likes of Aymeric Laporte and Jack Grealish have had little game time this season and could therefore be drafted in, while youngsters Cole Palmer and Rico Lewis may be given a chance to impress. Erling Haaland returned to Premier League action after injury on Saturday but is unlikely to be risked ahead of the upcoming weekend’s league game against Brentford. City have lost just one of their 19 matches in all competitions this season and have won all 10 at home.

Chelsea on a poor run of just two wins in six games

Graham Potter made a fine start to life at Stamford Bridge immediately after joining from Brighton but things have tailed off somewhat in the last few weeks, with the Blues dropping points in four of their last six matches, taking only two points from their four most recent Premier League games. With that in mind, Potter may be tempted to field a slightly stronger starting line-up than counterpart Pep Guardiola. Kalidou Koulibaly is fit again after injury and could return in defence, while Denis Zakaria, Christian Pulisic, Armando Broja and Hakim Ziyech may start having had to settle for places on the bench for most of the season.

Manchester City vs Chelsea prediction

Even with a ‘weakened’ team, it’s hard to bet against Manchester City at home. And with Chelsea’s mojo having seemingly gone, at least for the time being, Guardiola’s guys should just about be favourites to come out on top.

Prediction - Manchester City 2-1 Chelsea
