Manchester City vs Manchester United: preview

Sunday’s derby will be Manchester United’s first Premier League action in nearly a month: after all football in the UK was postponed on the weekend following the Queen’s death on 8 September, the Red Devils also had their clash with Leeds called off two weeks ago, due to policing issues relating to the monarch’s funeral. Before the pause to their league campaign, United had bounced back from a sorry start to the season to win four on the spin, a run that has lifted them to fifth in the table ahead of matchday nine. They’re six points off leaders Arsenal, with a game in hand.

In their most recent top-flight outing, on 6 September, Ten Hag’s men beat the Gunners 3-1 at Old Trafford, Marcus Rashford hitting a double to down the early-season pacesetters. Four days later, United’s euphoria was somewhat dampened by a home Europa League defeat to Real Sociedad, although they returned to winning ways just before the international break by beating Sheriff Tiraspol in Europe, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his first goal of the season.

As for Manchester City, they remain unbeaten in all competitions this season, but Premier League draws against Aston Villa and Newcastle mean Pep Guardiola’s side are a point behind Arsenal, who face Tottenham in the North London derby on Saturday. In their last runout before international week, City were 3-0 winners over Wolves a fortnight ago, Erling Haaland bagging yet another goal. The Norwegian now has a frankly ludicrous 14 in 10 appearances for his new club.

City, who thumped United 4-1 the last time the teams met at the Etihad, are the bookmakers’ clear favourites to win on Sunday. Last season’s walloping notwithstanding, though, the visitors have an extremely decent recent away record against their Manchester rivals. In all competitions, United have won six of the teams’ last eight meetings at City’s home ground.

Manchester City vs Manchester United: team news

For City, John Stones is unavailable after suffering a hamstring injury in England’s 3-3 Nations League draw with Germany on Monday. Fellow defender Aymeric Laporte returned to training last month, but it remains unclear whether or not the Spain international will be ready to make his comeback against United. “He was a long time injured,” City head coach Guardiola told reporters on Friday. “We’re seeing in training that he is moving well and his ability with the pass is exceptional.” Midfielder Kalvin Phillips is sidelined after shoulder surgery.

United captain Harry Maguire is out after also damaging his hamstring in England’s game against the Germans, but Rashford and Anthony Martial could return after recovering from injuries. “Harry Maguire is injured and I think, for the rest, we have some doubts with Anthony Martial, but he was training all week with the group,” Ten Hag said. “So I am really happy with that situation, he’s performing really well in training and makes a good impression. Marcus Rashford has returned to training, so I’m also happy with that.
